I am curious what others think: If life were discovered on another world (planet, moon, comet, asteroid etc), even if “non-intelligent”, would that make more people question the existence of their selected god or strengthen their belief system?

Of course !!!! Giordano Bruno was burned alive by the church with the charge of heresy only because he suggested starts were distant suns that could foster planets with life.... The church lost his mind because such idea will question the exclusivity of God at the perception of humans. In other words, it was going to screw up their life time bussines. Can you imagine burned alive only for a suggestion??? Time has passed and even today people will be against the possibility only because the conflict with their beliefs....

Give it a few years and they will make up mythology to support it, as well as citations from holy books that support it.

I think, sadly, it would have only a slight impact. A small percentage might slide from religious to agnostic/atheist, but we've already had several other major scientific revolutions (Heliocentrism and Evolution), and religion is still here.

I think it would cause many to reevaluate their position. Then again they would just be labeled as demons. That’s the excuse my father gave for dinosaurs. He was very religious, not too bright.

I think it won't have any effect on their belief's. May even cause weird off shoots...something to look forward to for those of us who find belief systems interesting.

I very much doubt there would be any net change, if we were to discover unassailable evidence of other life. I was raised in a faith that believes in 'unfallen worlds' populated by sinless beings who never endured the problem of evil, nor needed the saving 'grace' of Christ. For some religious people, while human beings may be a 'special case,' we are not necessarily alone, and that doesn't bother them in any way.

It might hurt those few who believe that god created humans and only us. Otherwise I doubt it would have much of an impact in that regard. It would however cause huge cultural shock, which could indirectly influence religions.

For a long time I’d assumed it would bring humanity together, making us realize and appreciate our connection to each other and our planet. Not anymore, though..

If we were attacked by aliens, we’d likely unite ..for awhile. The problem is, ‘faith based’ (religious) people are followers, so would ignore their own thoughts and quickly adopt those of their charismatic leader/s. We’re not far enough from apes..

It would reinforce my disbelief.

No. no evidence.

If the intelligent life were found to be more wealthy than us, we would immediately demand that they redistribute their wealth to us because that's the right thing to do.

It would do both
