This city DID disband their police and this is how it worked.
This is a great story of how it should work. A lot of the police money goes toward heavy armor and weapons. More crap from the Arms manufacturers. Getting rid of all the unnecessary gear can work especially in smaller cities. Maybe the rush toward large urbanization is not such a good thing. The larger the town the larger the problems. Still planners need to start thinking more outside the box.
Police have only been a thing since London about 200 years ago anyway...
The Police in UK are not armed with guns...BUT...they don't have liberal gun ownership like we do here...the only private citizens who have guns are registered Hunters as I understand it...there are SWAT Teams for confrontation but that is rare. A good portion of our population is armed so getting the guns off the street would have to be a priority and I see a BIG hurdle because of the 2nd Amendment and the NRA and the Arms Lobbyists...it going to be tough to get what is needed...not to mention all the damn redneck, gun toting wackjobs that we have.
I don't have any answers...but I see the obstacles...try convincing people from TX or TN or AR or KY or CO or any of the Southern or Western States to give up their guns...it would literally be war. I agree that the Police need to be DEMILITARIZED and "REIMAGINED" but you will NEVER get gun regulations that disarm the country through Congress OR Senate and it certainly wouldn't be VETO Proof...Traffic cops are using the stops to harass and they get away with murder...there are ways to control traffic without the armed Police...technology is advanced far enough. The killing MUST stop...
