“Why So Many Icelanders Still Believe in Invisible Elves”

Last night, I watched “Eurovision” with Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams. It’s quirky and funny, and I especially loved that it’s set in Iceland — a place I’ve researched and was planning to visit next summer (COVID-dependant).

Rachel’s character Sigrit brings gifts to the elves and asks for their favor. And they play another funny role that would be a spoiler to disclose. (Watch the movie if you like quirky humor.)

I hadn’t heard about Icelanders believing in elves, so I did a bit of Googling. Lo and behold — it’s actually a thing!

This article made me chuckle many times. It’s such backward and childlike thinking, but it seems largely innocent of causing harm (other than delaying road projects), and it adds a fun idea for tourist stops. Thoughts?

Leprechauns elves spirits from the earth are usually harmless in gardens and lawns maybe Iceland geysers/volcanoes are tended by Alice & the 7 dwarfs ? Believers make shit up for little kids and dying old folks headed for graves

Make sure you book your Iceland Trip when all this is over. I was there 13 years ago and it was the most amazing vacation I've been on. The scenery is spectacular. The people are friendly and polite. It's an awesome country

@dermot235 Will do! Nothing will keep me away. Except COVID ... there’s always that!

I was suppose to leave Aug 19 for 6 days there 😢
I was so excited - meeting my friend from Norway there, staying with her cousin, doing a 5k, trying out their 'baths', riding the ponies and doing some awesome hiking.... 😢😢

@Heidi69 Aww, I’m so sad for you! 😔

I’ve fully planned a 12-day trip out there for next summer ... I chose which cities I’d be staying in, how long in each, what activities we would do in each region. I was literally just about to book hotels when the 💩 hit the fan.

I can’t stop thinking about Iceland and sooooo crave to visit. We’ll just have to wait things out, I guess. 😒

I've been to Reykjavik many times on business. It's their nordic heritage, the people in Iceland are very opiniinated especially the women, I for one appreciated honesty while doing business.

Well, some people still believe in Sana Clause.

@Jolanta I do! And no one will tell me otherwise. 🎅🏼🎄😃

@Apunzelle Especially at Christmas time I guess.

@Apunzelle xmas time is for xians but leave oatmeal raisin coconut cookies and a Grain Belt beer for Santa, I shall fill your stockings with glee ! Growing my white beard now and ordering the right numbers of coal lumps & gifts for everyone in my sleigh....tiny reindeer are fat & happy with their practice flights

@Larry68Feminist Christmas is actually a pagan holiday supplanted by Christians. That’s why they left it the original December 25, even though Jesus was said to be born in spring, possibly April (per their Bible).

Either way, there’s a “religious” Christmas and there’s a cultural Christmas. I celebrate the latter — and with much joy, gusto, and belief in Santa! 😄🎅🏼

@Apunzelle there was no alleged vaginal virgin birth of an alleged baby gawd in a dirty donkey stable Saturnalia year zero. The calendar was not invented until 6 centuries after real King Herod died 4 bce additional evidence the bible story is 100% fiction written over 8 decades after the alleged crucifixion survival year 29 ce .... there are so many pagan traditions 2200 years old that alleging xmas is December 25 event year zero is ludicrous hoax of 17 centuries after real Emperor Constantine

It would be a brave IOM TT rider indeed that did not say hello to the fairies when going over their bridge

I'm not exactly sure about the Icelandic elves but here in northern Ohio at the Holden arboretum we're having some fairy doors for people to check out. 🤔 Just keep the gremlins out of the engine. 😝
