I had two hours sleep, my eyelids are so heavy. I just got back from the emergency vet and had to put my sweet baby Lucky down . I knew it was coming , and she had a good life. But things like this, make me wish I could believe. I love the fairy tale of seeing my loved ones again one day, that whole rainbow bridge thing . There’s no feel good about being an atheist , yet I cannot be any other way. Do any of y’all think some of us are biologically programmed to be non believers? I had read that certain types of people are.

Heartfelt condolences from one who feels with you, through the loss of a beloved animal companion of my own. Perhaps there is no "feel good about being an atheist," but in my experience, living a life without any god has led to a very good feeling. I am not sure about 'biological programming' but it does seem that some people are 'wired' for doubt and questioning more than others, while those who are not 'predisposed' to question are too often unwilling or unable to entertain, if even for a moment, an alternative point of view.

I think it has a lot to do with how much in built fear , and confidence we have. I find that people who need more on certain levels , need the comfort of god

@ALeigh I once heard someone say that we are 'hard wired' for a 'big daddy' or 'protector.' Perhaps most of us were, in the distant past, dependent on an aggressive defender who, in time, became a 'father figure.' The desire and drive to feel 'protected' and 'safe' may have led to the adoption of faith in an 'eternal father.'

Yes, more rational and intelligent people do tend toward non-belief. That's not me being smug, that's just how it is. More scientists tend to not believe while more NASCAR fans tend to believe.

I find that to be true as well

One of the toughest times in my life was when I had to put my 5 year old Boxer down. I still grieve when I think about what a great dog he was and him going so early. I have many funny stories and tell them often... So he still lives on!
