We are now more than ever in a censored society, is that a good thing or bad?
I don’t agree with the premise. We’ve never lived in a time when it was so easy and free to communicate.
For the sake of argument, I think censorship is generally bad.
I made the statement because I wanted to see where other people think we are, I think it’s obvious the opposite is true, but I do know people who have gotten into a lot of trouble simply because they were stating their opinion
@WilsonLopezJr Legal trouble? I would guess not. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences.
I don't really think that society is being censored. People have more freedom and opportunity than ever to express themselves. Those expressions often get feedback or pushback, but that's not censorship.
@Bierbasstard Who is threatening to shut down whose speech? The college? The government? Local law enforcement? Or is this a student protest?
@Bierbasstard not censorship. Demonstrations and protests are fine. Threats of violence are not. But it isn't censorship.
@Bierbasstard I don't think that some idiots at a college campus demonstrates that "we are now more than ever in a censored society." Coulter is a provocateur and her supporters threatened violence to counter the protesters too. There are much bigger things to worry about.
We are censoring ourselves into homogenous bubbles, which provides the perfect medium in which intolerance may grow and resilience may wither.
That's an awful thing. Censorship takes away from society.
How so? I do not count people who are offended by what I say. They may want to censor me, but they don't get to do it. If I do not intend to offend anyone, and do so unwittingly, I apologize if it's civilly brought to my attention. Then again, sometimes I do intend to offend. I have never once been arrested by censorship cops.
The word is censored. I do not believe that your assertion is true. Censorship was much more prevalent in the 1940s and 1960s. I see almost no censorship today. Who is censoring what?
There is some confusion with some people as to the evolution of societal norms with some people seeing this as imposing on their rights.
Things like it is no longer acceptable to use racial slurs...or call someone a r_tard or a f_ggot.
There are actually people that see this as an imposition on their freedom.
Really.
They like those words very much.
