"The Methodists preach about heaven,
The Baptists preach about hell;
The Atheists preach this is all that there is
So you damn better live it well."
Did I make this up? Or is it part of a song?
I don't think I've ever preached anything apart from non-violence in my activist days. I certainly never preached atheism. Preaching is a particular type of speech, not just any old speech but a specific type trying to win over converts. Even when writing to agnostics on this forum, I limit myself to asking if they are atheists as far as the easter bunny and the tooth fairy. That's a straight forward question, not preaching. So I think this song has it wrong.
I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and to do good as long as they live;
also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil—this is God's gift to man. - Ecclesiastes 3:12, 13.
If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” - 1 Corinthians 15: 32b.
Take your pick!
John Lennons 'Imagine', kind of hits those points.
No John, you were not the only one, and I am keeping that dream alive in your stead as well as for future Generations.
Vale John Lennon.
Give it time....if not, it'll be such a waste....has the basics of a country tune.
I've never preached atheism and I don't know anyone who did.
Widen the scope of "preach" .....you know like its not a dirty word.
Atheists don't preach. Or come to your door to impose their beliefs on you. These are important distinctions.
@Allamanda That's not my experience but I'd be willing to consider your evidence.
@Allamanda Dawkins is a world-renowned expert in evolutionary biology. The public discussion of his field is not a reasonable interpretaton of "preaching" within the context discussed by the OP.
@Allamanda Atheism is inherent to Dawkin's expertise in evolutionary biology.
You seem like you're looking for an argument, but I have a very busy day ahead and this is not a good use of my time.
@LovinLarge Excuse me, but NO ONE has 'evidence' about atheism. About evolutionary biology, I'll listen.
@Storm1752 The evolutionary development of humankind is evidence relevant to atheism as to the absence of a creator, but you completely misunderstood the argument which was about the fact that atheists don't preach.
I'm starting to smell the agnostic vs. atheist argument here, again unworthy of my time.
@LovinLarge just love it when people get "time-conscious"
@HankSherman Spoken like someone whose time has little value.
@LovinLarge lol. Yep, got me pegged.....just one of the reasons I like reading this site so much....fills my time with intertainment...better than t.v., almost equal to a decent book,.....
