The reasons given are more than likely true but it still does not explain why Woodward waited so late to warn the public.

I can't believe anyone would criticize Woodward for failing to make this public earlier. It wouldn't have made any difference then, and it won't make any difference now.
I think the article portrayed Woodward in a more positive light than he deserves, but the fact that he was able to interview DJT 18 times is almost as extraordinary as DJT allowing him to tape them. Unless the tapes are used as evidence when prosecuting him after he leaves office, which would provide some redemption, I find Woodward's delay immoral.
The longer drump talked, the harder it is for him to explain away.
Would letting this info out earlier have influenced
drump's behavior one iota?
Wow! Trump’s mistaken understanding of his intellect snuffs him again!
I'm not sure why Woodard waited so long, but I'm not surprised. In my mind, he's been a turd for the last few decades where he's made a habit of cozying up to Repub presidents and not being critical of them until they are under fire or already a lame duck. Only then does he publicly make any criticisms of them. He is a coward and has no real convictions or principles. Such a change from his glory days of Watergate. Nowadays he is content to have his big money from books, his continued access to all the presidents, and his fame. He couldn't care less about the good of the country, patriotism, or reporting the truth to the people. He is too chickenshit to be critical of a president publicly when that president is popular or as soon as he knows they are lying because he puts his own interests ahead of the truth or the good of the country. He doesn't want to lose his access to the powerful when it looks like they will be in power for quite a while longer, because that would kill his access to writing his next book.
Woodward wants Trump out of office, leaving it this late makes sure Trump's blathering is fresh in people's minds as the go to the voting booth.
Not ethical perhaps but effective?
