I got a puppy from a breeder in October, a German Shepherd. I have had them before and I want one again. I know all about thie"High drive" My puppy got sick so I called the breeder. who said she would take the dog to the vet for me. Unwittingly I trusted her. Well she refused to give her back stating I wanted to give her back but the multiple calls and emails that followed proved other wise. What she did was file a restraining order against me. The only thing I could do was go with a lawyer who wanted 10G and said it could take up to 2 years. By then my puppy , who is either dead or sold to some one else. woud not remember me and I would not want to break another bond. but I was heartbroken. We had just begun to bond. I write this to unload but to warn you there ar eno laws to protect peopl from pet theft. so be careful. It is on the rise.especially for that breed. It is April now and I sitll have not moved her bed or her toys. seems that I don't really get over things the way peoepl are supposed to

That's hard to go through something like that.

I hate to say it but this is pretty common, both the situation and your reaction to it. You might consider finding a center and finding a rescue animal to adopt than going through breeders or mills. They are already health checked and if you take your time you can still bond with them. Many of them are pretty devistated for being abandoned and once they come around, they are increadibly greatful for being saved... and it might help ease your pains.

I agree. it is common and the victim has no legal recourse. I have tried shelters and it is easier to buy the rescue. some rescue places get ridiculous. Washington GSD rescue are so uptight. the thing is I wanted a GSD to train as a service dog for me an. it was bumpy at first( potty training) but we were bonding.a then t she got so so sick. some people have said even that breeders make them sick on purpose. then she was gone just gone. I had no idea anything had been pulled on me. god how stupid could I bee I let her down I trusted some one.

Heath checks? Does that include hips and a full history? Most rescues don't spend the kind of money on health screening that a breeder of good ethics will do.

A large percentage of dogs that find themselves in shelters & rescues are mostly a result of bad owners who weren't screened and got their animals from somewhere that is "cash in hand".

There is nothing wrong with going to a breeder who backs their dogs and screens homes, because if anything happens to this guy ^ the dog will have a safe place to go and never find itself in the shelter system.
Just opening hitting an ad that says "AKC papers" is not enough.

@Qualia The shelters I've been to do as much as they know. Many pets find themselves in shelters because idiots get them not realizing the work that goes into it, or that a new baby or moving can't include the pet for whatever reasons. I am aware there are bad shelters who don't . I'd just rather see people tend to the already abandoned than to pay for breeding program.

@AmyLF I'll support a breeder who minds health/longevity/type all day long for peace of mind that if anything happens to me my dog has a safety network and never sees the inside of a shelter.
Yes shelters are full because of one off idiots with the one litter & no network that will sell to anyone without screening or backing should the person not be able to keep an animal for whatever reason.

Then there are the outliers where someone has died or become ill and the family isn't good backup thus an animal finds itself in a shelter.

In my world if someone doesn't contact the breeder and takes their dog to a shelter out of embarrassment or asshattery that person gets their name set on fire and put on one of many DNS lists.
I keep my own DNS list for myself and friends. There are otherwise nice people that do dumb shit with animals. That's why screening is important.
E.g. there are many breeds I admire, GREATLY, but know I'm not a good fit for.

@Qualia I went to shelter online looked for a rescue. no luck I finally gave up. Now I hear shelter are buying dogs for back yard breeders

Did you get notified of the initial temporary restraining order? Restraining orders are serious business and show up on background checks so I would fight that. I had to get one some months ago towards my ex who finally physically harmed me. It was a light slap on the wrist instead of pressing charges but it's still very serious and you have to be notified of the temporary. Once you have the temporary they set a court date where you can argue against the permanent restraining order. It should be listed on the papers you were served with. Hire a lawyer and fight the permanent restraining order with your evidence because if you don't show up then it's automatically permanent.

I did. hired a lawyer as well number of call emails i am tagged for a year. It showed up in Customs. i was taken into the"room" she asked if I was travelling with person, so it showed up. I am not buying anything or getting a mortgage have a good credit rating. They can't harm me any more than they have already

@squiggy_70 I'm so sorry. Going through the process I got to see how easy it really was to mess with someone with a restraining order. My ex deserved it and I had picture of physical marks and threatening/derogatory texts that were directly linked to his number with evidence but when I was there some people got at least a temporary on no more than heresay. When it was my turn the judge didn't even ask to see my proof that the texts were from my ex. It really made me worry for people who didn't deserve such an act against them. At least it's for just a year. Where I am the permanent is 3 years. The good thing is that I know she can't renew unless there is any new evidence so you shouldn't have to worry about renewal.

it is not permanent . it is one year. and ther is no more court to fight it.

@ThereIsADog they don't let you talk they just push you through.I got a lawyer the asshole didn't say anything. he said" it speaks for itself"

@squiggy_70 Where I am they allow both sides to speak at the temporary to permanent(3 years) hearing before making the decision. If the other side doesn't show up then the person making the protection order can make it permanent which was what happened in my case. My ex was served and as a result had to vacate our old apartment which he refused to leave even though he couldn't pay the rent by himself. I was also clearly told that the protection order could not be renewed unless there was new evidence proving that the person making the order was still in danger. Otherwise it expires. My ex still tried to harass me by getting a friend to send me video recordings and messages that he "still loved me" until I told the friend he could also be violating the order by helping my ex. Some people need the order like I did but I do wish I had to prove I needed it more than I did. Without any verification of the evidence such orders can do a lot of damage to people who don't deserve it.

Did you sign a contract? If you had a bond the dog will not forget you, promise. My boy remembered his breeder, mother, siblings.

Yes pet theft/flipping is a thing, among mills & unethical rescues. A breeder of good ethic with a name to uphold not likely to get themselves in a situation like this without a reason lest they set their name on fire.

Re: GSDs , they're one of the "ruined" breeds. Really hard to find an old school type anymore.

With all that what was wrong with your dog that you would allow it to be returned to the breeder? Need more details.

stupidity. I was stupid. she covered the floor with diarrhea and vomit. 2 times. My vet was closed so called her for information. she said Oh we will take it to the vet for you. I had a bill of sale and a cashed check. nothing about me returning dog or them keeping dog. but I am telling you now this is only good in a superior court with a very expensive lawyer 10 grand and 2 years he said only one lawyer in the whole state. You can't bring this up in restraining order court. you can bring it up in small claims but they only give you money. you read all these breeders who make claims to be resources form bonds with buyers blah blah. and in the end if I forked over 10 grand the pup may be dead or sold off

I know she won't forget me. My freakin lawyer was a joke. I would have done better had I gone by myself. when I tried to speak for myself the judge said" you hired a lawyer"

how are they ruined? . My puppy was fine. My GS I had 30 years ago was amazing. shit this doesn't help I thought it might to unburden myself. her is no solution. I have gone through it and have to live with what has happened

I had a red Dobie once. lovely dog perfect loved and protected children

@squiggy_70 That was 30 years ago. Finding one like that now requires detective work.
Nowadays they are too often "banana back" "hock walkers". It takes no time at all for people to ruin a breed. Trust. I can't look at my childhood breed, the rough collie anymore. (no eyes)

The vomiting/diarhrea could have been anything from parvo to something as simple as a change in water.

@squiggy_70 To be clear I'm not defending this breeder. Something clearly went waaay wrong. At the very least they owe you your money back for the dog. You don't want a dog from someone like this.

@squiggy_70 Dobes are fantastic animals. They're another "ruined" breed though due to popularity and a laundry list of reasons. There are a million factions pulling at them.
I love mine to pieces, searched for the boy for years, nearly gave up. If I could clone him I would (that way I'd never have to shop again LOL )

hmm good to know. the whole thing has been weird. people would come up to em and start barking orders or telling me what to do . geez us. the whole thing went south they lied about what they were doing then lied some more and Nobody judge, lawyer, breeder seemed to care about bonding. "
" this is'n the right court for this"

@squiggy_70 After all I've read over the years seems it's hard to find a good lawyer that will take on animal cases, not a lot of money in it I guess.

The breeder of my boy's sire also has the occasional GSD litter but they're working type and not the old school variety are often in the hands of places like Penn Vet Working Dog Center.

Much as it stings it might be better to just have it be an expensive lesson. The time, money and energy you're expending stressing out about this mess could be spent on a companion from a better place.
