As if ‘the world’ can think..? I’d say complacency, avoidance, and inattention have caught up with humanity, if one (large) nation in particular..

Nope cause it's true...

For a start, "the world" has no mind to lose, it is mindless. Secondly, what is universally considered to be madness, can sometimes be the truth. For example, that the earth is not the heavenly body around which all else revolves.
Many great discoveries were made by minds which were irritated by accepted "wisdom", such as the convoluted logic of phlogiston possessing negative weight. The upshot was the discovery of oxygen, carbon dioxidee, etc.
