I have now received two letters from the Veterans Administration informing me me that I qualify for covid vaccine and requesting that I make an appointment to have the vaccine injected. I have not yet done so. I am undecided at this time whether I will do this.
Neither of the two vaccines being used are approved by the FDA. They are both being administered under a “Emergency Authorization Order”. They have not gone through the normal controlled clinical testing required to establish their safety or efficacy.
Therefore, the safety and effectiveness of these vaccines is at present unknown. Whether they may cause eventual long term harm is also unknown.
I need to decide for myself whether I am willing to be a test subject in what is actually a trial study of an untested product. I may do this eventually but at present I am trying to evaluate this as best I can.
The vaccines are totally safe. Except that in a year or so, you may develop an unquenchable desire to eat people's brains and other organs. Pay that no mind...
I'm still waiting for my turn.
As soon as it's available to me, I'm getting it.
So far, I've been lucky and haven't gotten the virus, but I'm not about to play the odds if I don't have to.
I got Covid back in Dec. and had only mild symptoms, but that may only have been because I had the Regeneron therapy a few days after I got sick. I will wait my turn, until likely this summer, to get the vaccine, but will take it as soon as it's offered. I will then get back out into the world and start living again by going to public events and attempting to date again, tho still wearing a mask when appropriate and not doing any tourist travelling until Covid becomes low risk. I am tired of living the hermit life for the last year and want to move on while I still have decent health.
I decided for myself to TAKE the vaccine. The VA called and I took the first available appointment. At this point, it's all about the odds. And any rational person should be able to see the vaccine greatly improves your odds of escaping an ugly disease and/or death.
Science says the more people that are protected by the vaccine the less covid will spread. The less infections we have the less mutations will develop thus making everyone safer.
I'm retired and financially able to quarantine myself for the rest of my life but I took the vaccine because I want to stop this horrible disease not just for me but for everyone.
And therein lies the fundamental difference between the left and the right. Proponents of the right are concerned with themselves while the left is concerned for everyone. The community would be better off with more members like you.
When it comes to most major decisions, there's logic and emotions. More often than not, it seems, people use logic and reason to justify decisions already made using their 'gut feelings.' How often do folks examine the pros and cons, study the data, listen to qualified experts and use what they've learned to educate those 'gut feelings?' When making our decision to be vaccinated, the following questions come to mind:
Thank you for your well thought out response. It is helpful. I appreciate discourse with someone willing to go beyond sarcasm and ad hominems.
@dumasarok Thanks ... appreciate it. No need for ad hominems ... there's way to much vituperative rancor here as it is. Got both my shots, by they way, not as a veteran, but as an owner of an assisted living facility.
Do as you think best for you. Then start doing what you think important and don’t waste time looking back. Btw, I’m ninety and had both shots with no reactions.
I salute you sir! You are 14 years older than I and probably much wiser as well. Your advise is spot on!
Very pleased to register your support of the FDA as a socialist entity. Also, all three covid vaccines have been approved by the FDA.
I think that is a no-brainer! Pluses for the vaccine are in the event that you contract Sars-Cov-2 the worst outcomes will likely be prevented as in hospitalization and death. You do not take the vaccine and contract Sars-Cov-2 and have known or unknown underlying medical conditions, I think that you can guess the likely outcome.
I am allergic to a certain drug and have food allergy and had a serious reaction to a vaccine back in 1997. I was vaccinated against Sar-Cov-2 a week ago. I did not even experience the mild flu like symptoms that some people experience post vaccination.
Well, I've had mine at age 71 and feel a HUGE burden lifted. So far, I haven't seen thousands of war-weary nurses and doctors in ICU units in every hospital in the country working under enormous pressure 24/7 trying fruitlessly to save (but losing thousands every day)... those who had their covid vaccines. You make and take your best choices in life. You will live or die by those choices. I guess there are too many people on the planet, anyway.
Please correct me if I'm wrong, BUT, you FOUGHT for your Country in someone else's country to 'protect' the people of YOUR Country BUT you are unsure as whether or not to HELP Fight the C-19 Threat in YOUR OWN Country by being vaccinated.
How in the name of all things sane does work out?
They are approved, approved for emergency use. These are vaccines that are based on previous vaccines they have been in use for years which is why they were able to produce them so quickly.
You can choose not to vax, that's your right but if you don't you should still isolate and/or wear a mask everywhere you go because it's not just about you but about you spreading a deadly virus. Don't be a Typhoid Mary.
COVID isn't approved the the FDA either. Get the vaccine.
I don't believe vaccines not approved by the FDA can be administered. by the V.A. or anyone else.
. . . hmmmm -- why let a GLOBAL PANDEMIC influence your decision whether “Emergency Authorization Order” is reasonable ?
Britain has done a lot of the testing for you with over 20 million people injected. No major issues reported so far. I was fortunate enough to receive the first shot of the Pfizer vaccine in January. Apart from a sore shoulder, and feeling a bit under the weather on the evening of the second day afterwards, it’s been fine. Go for it.
Thank you.
