Living in a conservative community one finds themselves surrounded by Christianity. Too the point where every conversation leads back to their god. I dare not say a word since I am generally out numbered. Some of my best friends know that I do not believe and we avoid the topic. I find it difficult to befriend anyone other than my partner whose views are as mine. Unfortunately there is so much politicizing intertwined with faith that it becomes difficult to separate the two. Aging and history roves this cycle will never end. The numerous religions bickering leads to endless battles and wars. It’s hard to keep ones sanity. It would be nice to have a conversation without brining up politics and discuss matters irrelevant to politics. I’m just saying...
This sounds like an alien landscape to me. Up here in Canada it’s so different as to be almost completely opposite in very many ways. Our Born Againsters have marginal political power at every level and so even nationally they wouldn’t dare campaign against rolling back access to abortion, for example. Or LGBQT rights. Try it and they’d get killed at the polls, and they know it. So they keep their heads down when out in public. And the teaching of creationism/intelligent design would get them laughed off the playing field. Might be somewhat different in smaller towns and rural areas...but even there our so-called Socialist Health Care System is a highly cherished and valued fact of life. And religion is a seldom discussed issue in everyday life. Unbelievers are everywhere, and in our culture secularism has the upper hand. So we’ve definitely got a lot more in common with Europe than the US.
you could move maybe?
Not even an option, IMHO. The overt religious are everywhere
@LaDizdeOdd been to Oregon lately? Plenty of places like that though, anarchists, etc
My biggest pet peeve is that others want to put their god into their politics. This is all a big laugh to me but the others all think their Jesus had something to do with America and their proof is in their bible. Then Revelation is linked to other books to prove it, etc. Think a moment. Revelation. The book name itself makes you want to proclaim something. It is ridiculous!
I hear you. So here you are, on this site, where....you can talk about politics if desired, but you can also talk about dogs, or gardening, or nature, or art, music, underwater basket-weaving, whatever. It is a good thing.
We are close to the same age. I am in a middling deep South town, as my moniker suggests.
(Are you IN San Antonio or in a small community in the general vacinity? I ask, because big cities ALL have significant secular connections if you just make a point of looking for them.)
I am surrounded by just as much Xtian magical thinking permeating every aspect of the culture. But I have been able to find like-minded people. It makes a very welcome difference.
I think part of it has come with my own transformation over time, gradually shifting from being someone concerned first with not offending anyone to now, where I speak my mind much more comfortably, whether it is about my atheism, my queerness, concern for the environment, social justice issues, or liberal/progressive political outlook. That last is, of course, a natural outgrowth of the others. I discovered that, so long as I remember that I am...all of us are, capable of being wrong, but I have every right to speak up about my perspective and how I arrived at it, the people most intolerant of my views have stepped back, and I have found more who appreciate at least significant parts of my views. Life is too short to not stand up for what we care about.
I feel you. I live in an area populated by Qtards and Qpublican Evangelicals. I'm surprised the city council doesn't have me arrested every time I try to leave town for taking 98% of the cumulative IQ with me. I stay to myself. Got one buddy I kinda work with and a couple of gym bros but thats it.
They would just love seeing some of these!! A few years ago I got some not so nice looks wearing the “Cross and Boomerang” shirt when visiting a friend in North Carolina.
I particularly pove the Family Circus T-shirt. Out of the mouths of babes.
I honestly could not pick a favorite. They are all wonderful, and accurate, sadly, very accurate.
"Religion flies you into skyscrapers" painfully accurate.
I went to visit my BB who moved to NC. New car, NY Plates. I was stared at at times in Vir/NC. then I put on a gift , one of my 4 NRA hats. I am not tall Under 5'5", men smiled at me said HI, Hi what kinda toys you got, 2 women spoke to me, both close to 6 feet tall, very hot, they looked down towards me, kinda creepy, (so women are not alone in feeling sexual predation, it had that vibe, unwanted attention). She was a hoot as she prattled, 'I like your hat a real Manly hat " or some such prattle. I think if I did not have wife and kid with me, she would have suggested a meet up.
So I humbly suggest when you are down there you get an NRA hat to go with your shirt. It will confuse them. Could cause spontaneous head explosions. Kinda like the chinese watermelon issue a a few years ago. (too much gibberellic acid, The out side of mellon grew big, but stopped, the roots kept dumping juice into them. POP goes The Melon Crop. It woke up the village. See youtube)
@praytothemilkjug LMMFAO! That’s a great idea there about the NRA and the shirts!! Thing is I know little to really nothing about guns. A few have told me that by putting these on I could be looking for trouble in some places, But I’ve survived NYC streets my whole life which are far tougher than those so-called rural areas, where most evangeloons come from.
Yea, I know what you mean Gsanders55. I've lived in Georgia my entire life and there's a church about every 100 yards around here. There are times I wish I could move to a more sane part of the world.
BB sold his home on LI, ny, moved to stupid land in NC. We went for a visit. SWMBO goes to RC Church , brought up the kids to be Catholic, but at some point they listen to my points and walked away.
On a trip to Bumb Fuck NC to see BB, We crossed over from Virginia and my son started counting churches as we were on local roads..he finally said "hey dad I been counting churches and they must have one every 1/4 mile, so I stopped, it was too much"
I replied, "well it is like Hasidic temples in Brooklyn, 2 per block. And they fight tenaciously for converts."
My LS moved to same place, they lasted 2 days before realizing it was intellectual/social hell. They moved back, it took a year, a year of hell.
B-L said he went to the gym. He opened his locker BIBLE opened up several, Bible in Every One!
now Catholics I understand, they can do Hail Marys with each rep, but non Catlicks don't do those prayers....well maybe pissypalians might.
At least now, here on LI we can have weed. Maybe we will eventually see god!
In the story of jews in the dessert they could only speak to god in the tent where the sacred smoke was always present, sacred incense.
That was pot no doubts anymore. Many jews now are adding weed to their religious endeavors.
hey maybe I will go to Shul if they fill a temple with sacred smoke. Group Hot Boxing!
and Charles, you have my condolences.
