The Church of Scientology is not really a church. There are no services. No prayers. No baptisms. And you have to pay up the wazoo to “Go clear. So it’s not a church.

Many years ago while walking one day on London's Tottenham Court Road, I was approached by a pretty young woman as I drew level with the Church of Scientology building. She asked me if I would like to come inside for a free ' stress test, ' I told her that there was no point because there is not a single atom in the universe that is not undergoing some degree of stress. Pupils dilated she stared at me and I walked on my way.

Good one. Had you accepted, you would have been subjected to endless grilling, confessing to all your misdemeanours and foolish actions in your life (assuming you have some) all written down, filed away, and kept, while you continue your path to cosmic enlightenment, while coughing up as much money as possible, and, we wouldn't want that file released or anything like that, would we? Don't worry, it would be safe, as long as you stayed loyal and coughing up money, while abandoning all your family and friends who didn't go along with Scientology ('subversives' ). So, you made the right choice, as well as baffling this dimwit with a bit of real science. Gee, I wonder what's in Tom's and John's files? Guess we'll never know, as long as they stay loyal. Cults and religions; religions and cults.

Anyone on this site who despises religion and cults, if they have not already watched the documentary on Scientology, 'Going Clear', should do so. As hideous as I thought this stupid cult was, I was appalled at the grifting, the blackmailing, the intimidation and the blatant criminality of this modern pseudo science cult. It is also a perfect example of how a cult can go from one lunatic to a whole movement with political and economic power in just a few decades, and how it is always the followers in cults, after the founders, who actually build the cult based on mythology of the founder. Also, although the documentary is careful, is it quite clear to me why these big star Scientologists, like Cruise and Travolta go along with it, despite what they must know about the activities of this cult. Let's just say it's a kind of blackmail. The power that this cult has in America is greater than the official numbers might suggest. Of course, it would be in America, wouldn't it. In Europe it is largely banned, but I've read that authorities tolerate small Scientology groups there, not wanting to create a persecution complex situation that might only broaden its appeal. I watched this documentary and it only made me loathe religions and cults even more than I did before.

It is a pretty low brow church maybe. But it all depends on how you define the word church. I would define it as. Any organization which promotes itself by claiming, authority based only on faith. That fits.
