An opinion. As far as I know it's just mine. Some people seem to have this need to believe that everything is under control. This need is so acute that even the things not in thier personal control must be under the control of something else. Something like the universe cannot be left unchecked.
Yes some people find the idea of chaos, or even random chance within limits, frightening. And when you add that fact to the obvious and often stated origins of animism, that the only way early people could explain things beyond understanding was to imagine that everything had a brain just like a human one, then the origins of the supernatural, become very clear.
Then you add the fact that some people will pretend, first to themselves and then to others, that they can control, or at least understand those minds better than others, and you have started religion.
Some say that prostitute is the oldest profession. But Con-Artist/Priest, they are the same thing, may be even older.
Maybe it’s rooted in our propensity to see patterns in life, and an assumption that the orderly pockets we find in the universe mean that someone or something is in charge. I see so many members of this community, who have jettisoned their gods, seek to replace them with less-personalized ideas in various spiritualities that still reassure them that some sort of controlling principle is operating out there, like karma. As for myself, I find comfort — and possibility — in chaos. Control smothers creativity.
The Universe will be just fine as always. Humans are not The Universe however....
There's not much we can do about it. The environment for example. By the time we get to a full EV fleet in this country, someone will develop a zero emission internal combustion engine that is more environmentally friendly. Gas engines won't be illegal in my lifetime. The universe will exist without us.
