Mythology. Its fundamentally a form of story telling. The Abrahamic religions were very violent in every possible. Helped them a lot to spread.

Aliens brought religion as a way to control humans...lol

I've thought if an alien species wanted to take over earth, they obviously have the tech to monitor what goes on here....so one would show up claiming to be god, do some sleight of hand, toss a few flash bangs and poof you're in power.
But then that we'd just kill them somehow because that's how the human do do.

Where did it come from? , who cares! Where is it going is much more interesting. Will it die out in the face of science and human knowledge?

@vikingar666 that may be true but will the sheep follow a god or maybe they will follow the science/knowledge of others

As I said, the depths of hell.

How do people arrive at religion?

  1. The need to explain things that can't otherwise be explained by current levels of scientific knowledge.
  2. The need for comfort in ther own mortality, and that of those close to them.
  3. The need for hope, in hopeless situations. To feel in some degree of control when they have none.
  4. The need to set a moral code, in a society not sufficiently evolved to figure out morality for itself.
  5. The need for a sense of unity and community.

Now pondering whether the Great Flood only happened inside the red circle, too. That would have been a much easier party trick. God could have simply borrowed water from elsewhere on the planet.

Our need for answers, our ability of imagination and our tendency to anthropomorphize everything.

I like Christopher Hitchens take on this. God didn't show up in China where they could write and keep a record of this, he turns up in the most god forsaken shit hole on earth full of illiterate people that nobody else gave a toss about.

Yes, it does. I think it comes from being aware and thinking what amazing things there are and believing something powerful must of say made the sun etc.
