The ethics of eating animals. Some argue that god granted man dominion over all living things. Others point out that most animals wouldn’t even be alive it it were not for the fact they were bred to be eaten so that gives them purpose.
Perhaps we can have a dialogue about the ethics of eating meat (cows, pigs, fowl, exotic animals, dogs, cats).
I have become reluctant to eat animals I could have been friends with. The good news is that chicken, fish and bison are still on the menu.
I prefer not to kill or eat my fellow animals.
All I know is that its kinda a family tradition...and while I don't have a problem with the thought of eating most any kind of animal, I would have a really hard time eating most any animal I had befriended. Was brought up with the moral that killing anything should at least have the justification of defense, or subsistance, and that makes sense to me.
Yeah, "befriending" seems to add another ethical dimension--like a predator grooming a child to be abused.
@Wallace that is a fairly twisted way to think about "befriending".
@HankSherman He meant befriending something you were planning to kill and eat.
@JeffMurray what part of his comment conveyed that to you???
@HankSherman You can ask him if that's how he meant it, but it read like that to me, clear as day.
The italicized part is what I heard in my head:
"Yeah, 'befriending' an animal you're going to eat seems to add another ethical dimension much worse than just killing and eating it --like a predator grooming a child to be abused."
@JeffMurray I see
I think humans have evolved to the point where we can get our protein from sources other than animals. If you have ever been to the stockyards or a chicken factory then you probably would be sick. The smell and cruelty is sickening.
Not probably. We can. What are the merits of that though is the question. I contend that a strict no animal product or byproduct stance is actually not the most logical stance to reduce animal suffering. If you could source your calories from waste streams, it's still more beneficial to animals to eat that, even if it's meat, than to eat "new" vegetables.
I'm plant based only. It served me well. Red meat is a caveman diet and will give you heart disease. And ruin you. Of course nobody wants to hear that or do it. And cows are bad for the earth. Plant that in your meat-head.That is; if you're a meat-eater.
Your statement is false. Based on vegan propaganda that simply isn't true. Eating meat doesn't cause heart disease. That cows are bad for the earth is preposterous. Then why do they exist? Factory farming of any species is unhealthy for them and the earth and the resulting animal products are unhealthy to eat and the corn and soy fed to the animals also ruins the earth's ecology and kills billions of sentient creatures. I discovered that an award winning goat cheese company is feeding their goats soy husks which renders the cheese unhealthy. Eating kidney beans can induce a heart attack or a stroke in certain individuals in 20 minutes. Plants evolved an entire chemical warfare system to protect themselves from predators. Gluten in grains is a very serious detrimental lectin. The oxalates in kale and spinach can shut down your thyroid function.
@Healthydoc70 New science says you are 100% wrong. 30-year study.
I do not buy into "propaganda" vegan or anything if possible. Meat gives you heart disease is correct. It reduces the arteries in your heart, leading to coronary artery disease. It is the leading cause of death and disability globally, and I stand by that comment. Like the vaccine protects you from Covid. That is science and not propaganda. I have spent decades reading about red meat, plants and believe I know what's on this topic.
And know we run a lousy Plan-et. If we were responsible for so-called "Super Powers," we could feed all humanity. Unfortunately, cows are bad for the world. Far worse than people realize. Clear-cutting forests for grain in the Amazon to feed cows when a plant-based diet can grow in much more abundance and is far better for our bodies. I'm talking red meat, cows, pigs ( yuck). Chickens may even wipe us out. But that's another story.
And know we all can't change overnight. ( we're the product of our environment and marketing.) My mother was old school and served up meat to me as well; it grossed me out. Our bodies are getting sicker from red meat, and so does the world. Changing how we consume en masse this disgusting product will not be our doing, but Mother Nature's, in the form of climate change. It hates us; (who could blame it) we're horrible house guests, messy, fighting all the time, greedy, and most likely an infestation on the planet. I
I saw and posted a picture of two hunters that shot dead a baby elephant and set me off on the meat tangent. But hard to look at. Very hard.
I wrote that comment two meatless minutes later. Your statement that "oxalates in kale and spinach can shut down your thyroid function." is true, but only if you consume it in large quantities. I believe my comments are closer to reality than yours. So, in general, I shut up about it. And frankly, I think your answer was fair to me, given we're fed a diet of propaganda from the meat industry. And that is bullshit, and that's what we end up with, and it's all over the place.
@Tourirst Will not argue with stupendous ignorance. New science, whatever that means certainly does not support your contention. You are like a god and jesus believer. You believe what you want to believe. I am familiar with all the studies and the books. You have no idea.
@Tourirst, @K9Kohle789 The smoking alone could have killed him. One who smokes often has other habits or eats other artery clogging items such as soda, beer, whisky and sweets. That fact that he ate meat and died of a stroke proves nothing without the other information.
@K9Kohle789 Cholesterol does not cause the clogged arteries. it is other things that cause the inflammation of he endothelial cells such as smoking. So facts are disingenuous. I am a stroke survivor caused in great part from lectins in grains, brown rice and mercury poisoning. Don't preach to me.
@K9Kohle789 The smoking is likely what done him in.
