Because as we all know EVERYONE can be a PERFECT person ALL the time. Shit like this is the reason i don't even try...To hell wth people who think we have to be careful with what we say.
Ken Jennings reportedly didn't get the Jeopardy! host job because of his old tweets
It is distressing that someone in the public eye can indeed lose their job or even ruin their career with a single ill considered tweet. Still, this phenomena predates the Internet, if one is the public face of anything, one needs to be careful of what they say or do in public. Look up Fatty Arbuckle, one sleazy party and the most well paid entertainer in history (up to that point) found himself unemployable in the entertainment industry. And honestly we are talking people who are already well off and privileged for the most part (I can't think of any exceptions off the top of my head) becoming slightly less well off directly as a consequence of something they did. The sad truth is that despite cases like this, a lot of privileged wealthy people do get away with saying and doing horrible things. There are vastly more important things to get outraged about, getting outraged because some rich SOB became slightly less rich because there are indeed sometimes consequences for their behavior strikes me as misguided at best.
I think you have a very healthy perspective on this. I personally don't give a fuck about celebrities and the rich and powerful, as far as their personal lives. They may as well live on a different planet than peasants like us. They don't know shit about us or care about any of us, in most cases, so why do so many of our fellow peasants get so concerned or enamored with them? I have never understood it, unless it just gives them some free entertainment or a chance to live vicariously thru them a more interesting or better life than they have as a peasant. However, having said that, I do care about their personal lives, esp. how they have treated others who had less fame, money, or power than them if they chose to become involved in politics. In that situation, they do have an effect on my life and that of fellow peasants, and their character, at least involving the public and others less powerful, as well as how corrupt they are, matters big time to me, as well as their policy positions, in who I will support or vote for.
Fatty Arbuckle was railroaded. I truly believe the same can be said about Mike Tyson. He was convicted and sent to prison on very questionable testimony. It conveniently voided a $25million contract he had with HBO, which led they ways for tens of $billions with the advent of PPV.
I don't know Jennings from Adam but here is my take on all this. If people argue and bring up crap from 6 months or a year ago, for example, we all know this is not what the argument is really about. It's time to stop being eternally offended.
@Gwendolyn2018 I agree with you but my meaning was actually about people claiming to be forever offended by things that we all grow out of in time. As for Trump. sexism, racism, etc. these should never be normalized in any way.
@Gwendolyn2018 "Bingo in the Elf Lounge."
I've wanted to see Levar Burton get the job anyway.
Don't give a flying rat's ass about Ken Jennings, or the last guy.
As far as the topic of having your words come back to bite you, whether it's on social media or anywhere else, don't say stupid shit.
If you do, and it comes back to you, own it.
Not for nothing, but I've heard people griping about their words or actions being held against them LONG before the internet showed up.
I agree with you. However members of the Church of the Eternally Offended make much noise.
