I have lots of cousins and uncles that are postal workers in fact three made it to postmaster in small towns. I've always supported the idea that having a mail carrier come to people's doors daily is a good thing but our digital world makes that completely unneeded.
I open my mail as soon as it arrives and put some in the keep pile and some in the recycle. Most days I have nothing for the keep pile and a great deal of trash for the recycle. There has to be a better way.
Although the internet, email and digital services in general, may not be much of a threat to postal services. Since the use of digital services actually increases the demand for post, in that people order things on line for delivery and many on-line activities generate paper work, so that use of the net has been found to generate more mail.
If it wasn’t for the junk mail, they would be in even worse financial shape than they are. Or you would be paying $5 or more for a stamp to cover the cost of delivering those couple of family Christmas cards to your door.
Maybe we need to quit giving bulk mail a discount? We The People are paying for their garbage to be delivered.
Remove yourself from lists. That will reduce the amount of unwanted correspondence. The Constitution requires a universal postal system. The USPS goes to "every" address in the USA. The other delivery services do not. The paper is recyclable as you know, & at this time of year the appeals are excessive. One can not digitally deliver a package ....yet.
