When you look at the popular revolutions that have occurred throughout history they all begin when too much of the wealth becomes focussed in the hands of a few people who then become completely insulated from the plight of their fellow citizens. After that it just takes one match and the heads begin to roll. Such a stupid way of doing business and yet history continues to repeat itself.
No Revolution is coming.
I’m seeing a repeated mistaken theme around here that only ‘the wealthy’ are investors in the stock market… The wealthy may be the majority shareholders, or CEO’s, or actual owners - but lots of ‘little people’ are invested through employee stock options and diversified pension plans..
Many are fully aware of the price of steel, or the success of a movie, or infrastructure investment plans.. For almost ever Republicans have pressed to tie Social Security to the Stock Market. It’s not just the wealthy reluctant to change directions, or start a revolution … there’s an upper & middle class out there who (often secretly) also vote for their wallets, or stock portfolios..
@WileEQuixote I certainly hope you are right as my 3 children live in the US with dual Canadian/American citizenship, so it's is a worry for me. While history doesn't always repeat itself it often rhymes so I think I have good reason to worry.
@Surfpirate I live here.
No one is giving up their cellphone and Netflix to revolt.
Which is why oligarchy will win.
@WileEQuixote Nobody is hungry enough to revolt yet, the cellphone and Netflix will be cut off long before that happens, so let's hope that it is a long time coming. I'd like to get my kids the hell out of there long before that happens.
All companies care about any more is their share value and growth. Growth can't continue forever, but somehow they think if they're not growing, then they're failing.
That's all companies care about period. The entire point of a corporation is to create value for its shareholders. When value= money this is what you get.
Never ceases to amaze me how many folks are tied to stocks … thus willing to let all kinds of shit slide so as to maintain their value..
I don't think that it is that big of a percentage of people, just the biggest percentage of greedy people. The 1% own most of the stocks and they aren't concerned about the rest of us. Sad way to live.
@Gatekeeper63 Think again, their pension plans are basically tied to stocks.. And whether or not ‘they’d’ admit it, most are very aware of the corporations they’re linked to. When I discovered/ realized this, I nearly gave up hope on any serious change…
@Gatekeeper63 did you know that one only needs a revenue of $34K to be part of the 1% worldwide. That qualifies as global elite:

Regardless inequality in the US and across the G20 is at an all time high: US wealth inequality - top 0.1% worth as much as the bottom 90%

I'm afraid so, but I would still like to think there's hope. ?
Agreed, I would think the cartoonists is trying to make a point to stimulate change, I know my carbon footprint is a fraction of what it once was.
@ArdentAtheist Mine too but I'm sure there's room for improvement. Whenever I'm with family I try to encourage change, but I'm met with a lot of resistance. I guess that's pretty normal. I live in low-income senior apts. and I cringe when I see the cases and cases of bottled water that come into our building either by the tenants purchasing them or receiving them from organizations. No one listens.
