There were a number of these anti drug propaganda films made in the 1930s and 40s often financed by William R. Hurst, such as Marihuana 1936, Reefer Madness 1936, Assassin of Youth (1937)
Hurst's altruism in trying to ban hemp actually masked his interests in the timber business when cannabis was poised to become the major source of raw material for paper, when wood pulp paper he produced was sold to his own newspapers to enhance his fortune.
