Philadelphia cop found guilty of manslaughter for 2017 shooting. Sentencing hasn't happened yet, date of in video.
The man killed had crashed his car after a pursuit. He got out and sat down. Other cops ordered him to put his hands up. He put up only his left arm, it is not known why he didn't raise his other arm. Not sure what was going on with the other cops, but the cop, who was charged, then showed up, pulled his gun and within 6 seconds shot the suspect dead.
The current DA, Krasner, seems to be doing a decent job. I'm sure @barjoe knows more. So, if I'm wrong, i defer to him. Their ex DA Williams was put in jail; he's out now. One of my son's high school friends was an assistant da there for a while under Williams. My son's last encounter with her was at a party where she drunkenly said, "I shouldn't be saying this, but my boyfriend deals drugs."
Sounds like a sterling bunch......
@AnneWimsey She was one of my students as well. She really was a "Legally Blonde" type. She finished 2nd to my son in the valedictorian race in HS. She was highly intelligent, but very ditzy and often made poor decisions. She chased after my son for a while -
Larry Krasner is a smart defense lawyer but he has no prosecutorial experience. Unlike most large Democratic cities, it's easy to get a carry permit if you don't have a criminal record. Carry without a permit and you face 5 years. That was policy under Seth Williams but Larry hasn't prosecute many weapons cases because he claims the law discriminates minorites. Even if enforcement might be discriminatory, regardless of race, if you're caught with an illegal concealed weapon, those laws should be enforced and the DA's office should pursue prosecution. Subsequently murders have gone up dramatically during his terms in office, while Rufus "Seth" William had murder rate start to go down. I don't think Krasner is doing a good job.
@barjoe I did not know. Thanks for the input. I knew they used to confiscate guns from permit carriers, at least people from out of town and make them collect the guns later. That was years ago and I believe that policy was being challenged.
@Beowulfsfriend Commonwealth is not a reciprocal state as far as carry permits go. Gun law in Pennsylvania are consistent for every country. That include Philadelphia country. Been that way for years. It used to be very difficult to get a special concealed permit for Philadelphia County. You had to prove special need to carry. It was in the early 2000s when I got my permit, which in Pennsylvania now allows open carry. If I wanted to, I can walk down the street with a side arm. I choose to conceal, most people do. Although you're allowed to, it's probably cause for the cops to ask to present your permit. If you don't have it on you it could be problematic. I rarely see people do it.
@Beowulfsfriend I do give Larry Krasner a lot of credit for getting a conviction in this case. A job well done.
