As the moderates and kind people leave, the mad extremists are left ever more in charge, which drives away even more moderates, leaving the crackpots even more in charge, and reaching ever more madness, because they believe that the decline is caused by a lack of the own brand of madness, which drives yet more people away. A self fulfilling death spiral.
