Absolutely ! Though "successful" can be a subjective term ...

And I personally know of three couples, all married now for at least ten years - all met online.

Good to hear EG!

Yes, one. On our first date we smiled at each other and both knew it would work. It was instant recognition. It turned out that we had almost met three times much earlier in our lives, but by some strange juxtaposition of space we missed. This time was magical and steamy, however, we couldn't make it last longer than three years together. We tried. We each had issues of mistrust. I still miss her a little.

So..... why not call her OG 🙂

@Abbelyne I am fairly sure it might start out OK and end up the same way. Neither of us would want that again. I know her well enough to foresee that she holds onto ideas, sort of like keeping score. I am the one that forgives and forgets.

After a number of years of separation, I decided to give online dating sites ago (not Tinder). I was (as with this site) brutally honest in my profile and bio. I don't try and present a false image of myself as it would only serve to to put the other person off at first contact. I actually got four responses from four women at different times, from four different States, each with remarkably similar stories. I won't go into too much detail, but I did find out later that these contacts were actually scammers operating from a 'boiler room' in south East Asia. I also however got scammed out of some money before I realised what was going on. I have to admit it made me very dubious about online dating. I guess if you are lonely, you actually want to believe that a person/s avatar/photo is real. I do believe however that this site is more about communicating with like minded people than dating, from my experience so far.

Yes, that is certainly a nightmare story, Ron. But one thing I can assure you, is that MY picture is 100% real 😀

@Abbelyne I don't doubt that for a minute. 🙂

@RonB Yep, the photo captures my usual multi-coloured look on a bad -hair day.

I haven't been able to bring myself to join a dating site. This site is as close as I'm willing to get. My friends have used tinder, but none of them found their current partners there.

Perhaps what is needed is a site like this where pressure is taken off dating and focus put on community instead. It seems so much easier to interact with others in a community rather than......... well I'm not sure what really.......... people have such varied expectations of 'dating'. Thanks for your comment S. I hope it's an intro to lots of nice people chatting to you.

I did! We've been married 6 years & still going. I met some really interesting people online dating (and I met some creeps too). But overall I enjoyed the adventure

Yyyyyeeeaaayyyy........ well you know what I reckon DD.......... everyone on here is going to be coming to you for advice. Lots of happiness to both of you.

I had luck meeting someone online. It was a long-distance relationship and that was problematic. It lasted four years and then his mental status (I think he had a breakdown) changed dramatically and that was the end of the relationship. It just took me WAYYYY too long to realize that.

But in the online setting, you have to wade through a lot of crazies to find a good person, and that takes a lot of energy. I'm basically an introvert so meeting someone new requires me to interact in ways that aren't very natural to me. I've weighed the pros and cons and decided that I'm going to stay on the sidelines for a while, because playing the game is too much of a pain in the butt right now.

Well, I can certainly identify with the 'problems' of being an introvert. But you must have had quite a lot of interaction on Agnostic to have made it to Level 6. Thanks for your comment.

@Abbelyne It's easy to "interact" here because everything is essentially anonymous, and because my interactions are issue-focused. I'm comfortable talking about things that interest me, but I'm lousy with small talk. And I find, oddly enough, that most people don' want to talk about assisted suicide on a first date!! (As but one example of an issue that interests me).

yes, lasted about 3 years. Was very good, her ex and kids were problematic. Lady was great until her brain exploded and she became the bitch form hell. Who just happens to be visiting this weekend, we split up in 2004.

Wow......... keep us posted R......

@Abbelyne haha, nothing like that, her dog loves me and is getting older, so she brought her down for a visit.

@Rugglesby Isn't it sad when you break up with someone, but you still really love their dog!

1

No, not yet. No luck interacting with anyone so far.

Well here's an interaction for you JD....... thanks for responding to the post. People seem to be really friendly on Agnostic and I'm certain you'll find plenty willing to chat.

@Abbelyne thanks for the reply. I guess I haven't been thinking of this as a dating site but more a place to discuss and engage like minded individuals. I don't have any expectations for finding someone to date here but who knows...

@JimDawson42 No expectations is good JD. I think that communication in a community is the really important and satisfying thing that a lot of modern society (and dating) lacks. If you found someone on here 'to date', how do you think your communication would change?

@Abbelyne I don't think it would change the way I communicate on this site. I enjoy just being able to chat with people here about many different subjects.

2

Oh c'mon AS don't be shy 😉

@Abbelyne I don't think shy has too much to do with it.

@AstralSmoke You're right, neither do I....

A year long relationship from Plenty of Fish I think. Was 8 years ago and threw him out after car accident by tractor trailer that was a hit and run. Fishy really fishy.

I'm not sure I followed the tractor story....... just run that by me again SG

He was a former DEA agent and current bounty hunter. Boston police never found truck that hit my side of car-we rolled-totaled car-broke my back-he may have set me up for insurance money. Threw him out before I got check.

@sassygirl3869 I don't know what to say. You've been through hell. You're a courageous lady.

Thank you @Chippie-that was very sweet of you. I'm having a tough nite and you made my day/nite.

I've had a few over the years

3

I have had a couple over the years. One lasted until he passed which was over 10 yrs or more and remained very good friends. A few others just became more good friends & FB friends but they are few and far between.

I'm pleased that you managed to find a good friend MM

2

Nope. I did meet one excellent woman, but it was a long distance connection, and I couldn't really see that working. I did read a recent article that said that dating sites offer a low probability of meeting someone, and that a single person would have a better chance of meeting a potential partner in social settings.

So you were deterred by the distance JC!
