Science can and many times does mask the truth just as religion does.
And we're off!
@Drank_Spear Adding a little fluoride to water has been a good thing for teeth, false rumors to the contrary. The food pyramid has been a good thing, it has just been slightly modified was more knowledge has been gathered. Eating margarine instead of butter was not pushed by science, but rather by the Federal Government during WWII because we were sending almost all of our butter overseas, especially to Russia. It was scientists who destroyed the myth that it was good for you. Scientists are not in a global conspiracy to rule the world. Don't believe every false rumor that you hear.
@Drank_Spear And we should believe you?? And you believe every conspiracy theory you are told and think that all the scientists in the world are in a global conspiracy to lie all the time? Good boy!
Oh boy!
@Drank_Spear Shit can be wrong? Who knew.
@Drank_Spear Well my shit has always been right.
Every human endeavor is subject to and can be abused by human failings, criminal intent or overreach.
But if science is guilty of masking the truth sometimes, then the whole point of science as a philosophy, is that the masking is seen as a failing. And should hopefully eventually be open to correction, indeed many will be eager to correct it, for the correcting of failings is regarded as the greatest of all achievements by that philosophy.
Whereas the whole philosophy of religion, is to prove itself faultless, and without need for revision.
So that while science has, can be seen to have, and hopefully will continue to progress. In theology there is, and has been, nothing new, since the days of Thomas Aquinas, and that is held to be good.
The mere fact that you yourself, understand that there is such a thing as, masking of the truth, is itself thanks to science and to living in a post scientific world. Because before science/philosophy the only way that you distinguished between truth and false, was by which authority you accepted, which usually meant which tribe you belonged to. So that the very idea that given wisdom may be open to question, is mainly a scientific one. Science being a child of philosophy, (Originally called Natural Philosophy.) and the only reason for inventing philosophy in the beginning, at all, six or seven centuries BCE, was because given wisdom, in other words tradition and religion, was already, even by then, seen to be failing the world.
Awesome, Carl Sagan like response. Perfect!
Can at times as in if theory is established for a long time, scientists can work on that false assumptions and they can also stop looking altogether. I find it interesting the Big Bang theory has been severely challenged lately as our sensors get better.
A very important attribute for any research scientist is the ability to think outside the box. And assume nothing.
The most important thing to understand about science is it is not a thing, it is a method of discovery so something may become known (the word 'science' is from the Latin for knowledge). So when you say 'science', you are saying the accumulation of humanities knowledge thus far. The scientific method is not perfect eg can do lots of repeatable experiments which indicate or 'prove' the Earth is flat even though we now know it is not. But it's a pretty good method and the best we have devised thus far.
@Drank_Spear The irony is they are complete and opposing opposites, religion(s) and science. One is about knowledge and one is about belief. One requires facts and the other requires faith. But you are correct, both have developed a doctrine for their respective groups. The narc's seem to climb to the top of any group, look at Fauci then any evangelists and their personalities are similarly arrogant, not to be questioned.
There is a snobbery in science which I hate as everyone can utilise the scientific method and do so in everyday life eg observe, measure, repeat results and adapt when new information comes to light. Like pretty well all intellectual institutions, science has been corrupted by the corporate world, higher education another glaring example. Our most brilliant minds end up in the defense industry because that's where the money is.
I also see some correlations with religion eg a lot of unquestioned group think with many proponents never actually understanding what they support. Never actually read the book so to speak. To dismiss those who question official science, especially regarding social issues, is the most anti-science thing you could do. New technologies through scientific advances is all good, but it is how we apply them if we apply them at all is the real issue for humanity. This requires debate, importantly not pure science based debate but also considering human society and all other life. Should we adopt this and how? This is how the agenda should be set. unfortunately, those that fund the research are allowed to set their own agenda.
