Just a couple of days ago a lady on a village told me that her son is studying in Erlangen ... But it took me some time to figure out the name ... I said Nuernberg ... Her face lit up... Oh, this happened in a Chinese village.
When I was there I was stationed in Graf we would go there some times when we got time off
Stayed at the American hotel also in the square the train we took would take us right there
Went to a concert at the place were Hitler gave his speech it was a few blocks from the square.
Lebkuchen but the city is probably better known for the Nazi past and the Nuremberg trials ...

@germangirl90439 Speaking of Christmas markets.... I had no idea that there are so many forms of ginger desserts in Germany. A German friend baked some cookies and sent them to me over the winter holidays. I must make a pilgrimage now.
@ailurophile during my childhood and adolescence shortly before Xmas my grandmother received a a small metal trunk with several pounds of NUERNBERGER LEBKUCHEN ... I had no idea about the ginger connection until I heard the expression gingerbread house for the first time. The German equivalent Knusperhaeuschen (knusper = nibble)does not allude to ginger.
@PontifexMarximus I watched a show on European Winter Markets last year... all I remember was that many cities in Germany have their own versions of Gingerbread. I'm sure the rest of the show was quite good,but the news of gingerbread crowded everything else out of my mind.
@ailurophile when I was a child many cities had their specialties and they were only available at certain times of the year. Nowadays it's Xmas and Easter all year round. Aachen was famous for a different approach to lebkuchen (Have to check the etymology) in terms of shape and hardness.
