Wow. The first two answers pretty much said it.
- Because it's not pretty, safe, or pleasant.
- Truth rarely matches their preferred fiction. If truth is acknowledged, we have to accept some level of responsibility or give up a portion of the credit.
I don't think I could much improve on those.
