Right and Left are split almost 50%, so no matter who is actually in charge, half of the population is not going to be happy. And politicians cannot compromise without risking losing the small majority that keep them in office, no matter which side they are on.

You have just laid out the argument for ending the filibuster 
Actually, gerrymandering is the single biggest reason for the division. In gerrymandered districts, the most extreme candidates tend to succeed. Polarization is the result.
Only in a world where gerrymandering is the reality is ending the filibuster going to be a necessity.
