Before I move, I find a house, the job is usually already there. Then I have to check the laws and some peculiarities of insurance. Then I get to know my neighbors. I once had the opportunity to get to know them before I moved in, and it was a great opportunity to realize that that neighborhood isn't very nice. I used to find where the kids would go to school, the shopping areas, scope out the restaurants, check out the local attractions. I've been in Omaha for 15 years (in 4 different homes) and I've almost forgotten what it is like to be new in town.

I study the heck out of the city on google maps. Then take a walk around the neighborhoods. Find a good park to go to. Food places, gyms, grocery stores are important for sure. Even the library, post office and police station. Good luck in your new town! Sounds exciting!

On July 31st, 2017, I moved to the richer part of town, "The Garden of The Gods." (GoG) I then went on a walk a day later after getting aquainted to the facility. I came back from my walk only to have my new boss call me in for work a day earlier than I said I would be available. I was bored anyway. I still have not gotten around much of this area. I only have been down to Safeway down one way, and by my place on the Garden of The Gods Road. I do know my way around the North Academy area now and Austin Bluffs. My friend drives me to Wal-Mart and around the shopping areas there. The Chapel Hills Mall is there too. Best Buy, restaurants, my gym. etc... Everything is near me within a 15 minute drive by car, or a 15 minute ride by the bus. The bus system is right by my work store. I walk 10 minutes to work everyday. The 7-11 and other stores and food places are near by too. Dutch Bros and Sonic are close too. I take 2 buses to get to my college as well. I know the route.

Last July I began my move from Maryland to Idaho. Before I left I got on google maps and found points of interest along my route & around where I was going to live. I tried to find restaurants I like, landmarks unique to this area and places to do shopping. It took me a while to learn the ins and outs of the area; eventually, you have to turn off the navigation and just wing it.

First thing I look for after a good grocer is the local bookstore.

I do a lot of research first. Before I even step foot in the new location. Maps and understanding my bearings are always high on the list and know where the basics are hospital, grocery shopping, utilities, library, gas stations, Costco, Sprouts - all that is done before I arrive. The rest I discover day to day.

Check out the local music scene and see who is looking for a guitarist.... that means bars and restaurants... .. where is the best pizza?

I'm moving to a new town in a few weeks - it's about 175 miles away, same state.
Been there three times to hang out, chat with shop owners, hit a coffee shop with live music.....generally mill about and talk to the People.
I'm pretty outgoing and friendly when I want to be so meeting folks isn't difficult.

There's only two things I check when moving in a new city, nearest airport and nearest hospital. The rest can present themselves as the need arises.
