Favourite quote?
A few minutes ago I was on Facebook and was idling through my profile feeling smug at how little information I had put there. It asked me for my favourite quote. That's one of those questions like "Favourite book?" or "What do you want to do today?" where the answer is not always the same. However the two quotes that usually contend for favouritism with me are "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities" and "As flies to wanton boys so are we to the gods; they kill us for their sport".

Can't go wrong with this guy.

Hitch...sadly missed

I saw Christopher Hitchens mentioned, and it reminded me that one of my very favorite quotes is one of his:

“Human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes it.”

Well behaved women seldom make history.

I have a 14 year old daughter. I reminder her of this quote whenever I think of it.
She, like her mum and I, aims to misbehave.

I'm a big fan of just about any good quote, but I also like the occasional humorous Jack Handey quote:

If a kid asks where rain comes from,
I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying."
And if he asks why God is crying,
another cute thing to tell him is
"Probably because of something you did."

LOL!!!!

When Fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross. This has often been attributed to Sinclair Lewis, but Snopes cannot confirm it.
It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees. Emiliano Zapata
The best you can possibly do with your life is tackle the motherfucking shit out of it. Cheryl Strayed

I believe the Sinclair Lewis portion of the quote is everything before the bible part. While it's certainly appropriate to the times, it's an add-on.

As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. What differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy.

Abraham Lincoln, 1858

Social progress can be measured by the position of the female sex.
From each according to his abilities; to each according to his need.
Religion is the opium of the masses.

I’m doing two because I’m a rebel (without a clue)

“I'm a pacifist, but the most American thing you can do is to dissent, and the most un-American thing you can do is to stifle dissent. When you feel threatened by the suppression of your liberties, you exercise them to the nth degree, you scream your head off every chance you get. You talk to people you don't agree with. Really good advice: Every day, talk to at least two people who don't agree with you. It's the only way it is going to get done.”
Utah Phillips

I don't have a favorite, although I've collected thousands over the years. One that struck me As fascinating in the past few hours comes from a book I just read, or more precisely heard as it was an audiobook, Till We Have Faces by the Christian apologist C.S. Lewis. The novel is a reworking of 2nd century writer Apuleius' story of Cupid and Psyche as told by Orual, Psyche's older sister.

“As for all I can tell, the only difference is that what many see we call a real thing, and what only one sees we call a dream.”
~ Lewis' character Orual.

I started that book last night and am just finishing it...again. It's been my favorite C.S. Lewis book since 1973, when I first read it, while visiting a different mission than mine in Haiti. I noticed it in the bookcase of a friend and took advantage of the rare delight of finding a new book to read.

I thought that was an interesting take on the difference between the real world and the dreamworld.

I have 2 favorite quotes really.

  1. Physics is like sex: sure, it may give some practical results, but that's not why we do it.
    --Richard Feynman
I have a BS in Physics so it definitely resonates with me.

  2. Grief is the price we pay for love.
Seriously helped me when a friend killed himself. Also helps with heartbreak.

The quote I listed as my favorite quote in my high school yearbook remains my favorite quote.

You still have made a choice."
