What is truth? What does truth mean to you?

Since Trump became President and declared war on reality with fake news and a constant blitz of lies and deception, it has become harder to discern what is truth. A large cross section of America has lost its grip on reality which is really quite scary. The same people who will not question their own faith claim easily proven facts to be fake news. It’s the perfect storm for a shister like Trump to leap to power. Now, after more than a year as President more and more of his own supporters have realized they were misled, even swindled to believe Trump was something he is not. Still plenty remain undeterred, especially those who feel Trump enables their own ideology.

Truth is defined as “that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality” but whose reality? It’s so easy these days for someone to claim they hold the “real” truth aligned with their own perceived reality which in fact, is their imagination. In discussions, people use opinions to create their reality confused with made up facts to support their position ~ it’s a combination of ignorance and a stubborn dismissal of research and understanding of scientific method. We are susceptible to being influenced by the proliferation of fake news, propaganda and the influence of others who are ill-informed. The internet has proven to be a double edged sword with the ease of access to information both helpful and hurtful to our collective understanding of the world around us.

I had a discussion with a friend recently regarding this very question: what is truth? This person placed an unequal value on information from sources they believed versus other more reputable and contradictory sources. For instance, they would believe their own ideological sources over more critically acclaimed and even scientifically based sources.

I think this is a failure to understand there is a difference between reality and imagination, bonafide fact and opinion, scientific methodology and plain nonsense. What are your thoughts and experiences with these issues and this question?

He doesn't care about people. He's about to make things a lot more difficult for people living in social housing. He's a horrible man.

It's never been hard to discern the truth to me. I've never bought into memes or anything like that without fact checking them. Being a critical thinker, it's my job to parse through the bullshit and uncover the facts through bonifide research.

I'm one of this annoying people who corrects people's fake memes with fact based evidence and research.

The problem is that most, or all, of Trump's supporters lack the ability to think critically, and for themselves. It's easier to be a blind follower.

I recently saw a cartoon where Trump was telling Plato (historical advocate of absolute truth) that a lie becomes truth if it's repeated often enough.

Saying this happened since Trump was elected is naive. Read Chomsky's essay on manufacturing consent. The dumbing down of the masses (or rather, brainwashing) is inevitable and required to make the existing system function. It will get worse. They are after the universities now; look into the activities of the Koch brothers and how they fund certain schools research programs.

Trump ushered in a new level of deceit and deception. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that.

@lkahleski Degree, yes. Kind, no.

I understand truth and reality to be what is happening now. Something that is alive and fluid. Not something static to be put into words and ideas. I agree with you that our current president has tapped into that part of our population who aren't as concerned with scientific, international or statistical evidence as they are with his emotional appeal. I personally know people who voted for him and still defend his presidency. I just have a great love for truth and reality as it is now and trust that life could always be better yet it could be worse too....

Despite was the definition says I think "truth" is what everyone believes to be, and "fact" is what really is. History has changed from truth to fact for example Russia wasn't the bad guy, we placed missiles in Turkey pointed at Russia. Once they found out they sent missiles to Cuba yada yada Bay of pigs. We just had to make Russia look weak and like the bad guy and I'm sure our relationship with them would be a whole lot better if we didn't start shit. Point is at that time what was told was truth and everyone believed it but it was not fact.

We have moved into an era where verifiable facts are taking a back seat to tribal affiliation. This is especially scary because with that kind of mindset virtually anything goes. Anyone can be demonized or scapegoated. It must be resisted at all costs if we are to keep our democracy. There are many who are ready, willing, and able to exploit division and discord for their own profit. The stakes could not be higher.

You are exactly right. A lot of the purpose in the current chaos is so that people can grant themselves license for behaviors that our society would not normally tolerate -- tribalistic bigotry, thievery, short-sighted selfishness, etc.

It's amazing how many people among us have such monstrousnesses so close to the surface to be quickly brought out as driving characteristics.

Trump is a fascist, his war on news is indicative of that. He believes that anyone who questions the leader is an enemy. He says that.
The reason he tweets rather than has news conferences is that tweeting is one sided. He is not questioned. Fascist.

Everybody including Trump has their own truth. I have a girlfriend I worked with years ago...she has since moved to Arizona. She told me point blank "journalism is dead. All news is fake news." I know that is false. Listening to Sarah Sanders try to not tell the press anything every day and be snotty to boot is wrong. Trump is a racist, money laundering mafia like President who has encouraged income disparity with his tax redo. He is homophobic, not really Christian (his Christianity is cult like) He will ruin the enviroment with his deregulations. He will ruin the poor with no affordable healthcare. We are doomed.

It’s a sad state of affairs

Well if it comes from the mouth of the Royal Orange Baby, it ain't the truth

The god delusion is at the forefront of ignorance. As long as ignorance reigns "supreme" the flock will not see reality. They'll keep to their ideals because they make them feel warm and fuzzy and laziness is acceptable. Truth is based in scientific fact. That is the true reality. And that will remain evasive for way longer than it has to.

I agree!
