Why are so many people so fascinated with the Royal Family?

I think it is genetics, combined with indoctrination. Just like religion. The need for a "father" and the possibility of recognition.

Nobody does pomp and circumstance better than the Brits. But these really quite ordinary people being born into a role that requires them to be viewed as extraordinary lends a certain fascination. And in light of recent events, I'm beginning to think our decision to rebel and separate ourselves from the Commonwealth may have possibly been a mistake.
I'm thinking it might be that they still use Prince and Princess in their titles the way that fairytales do.
