Send in the clowns?

Humor is a very important part of my life. I enjoy reading posts by groups like FSM. Yet, in my real life daily interactions with the humanist, skeptic, agnostic, atheist, etc . . . community, I find a real lack of humor when it comes to discussing religion, or lack thereof. I've met a bunch of really great and smart people but none have a sense of humor to match. Am I the only one who notices this?

A lot of atheists are survivors of bad experiences in religions. They are angry, and thus not very humorous.

Personally, I feel that life, while wonderful is also absurd. I like to laugh!

What was Jesus' favorite band? Nine Inch Nails

I am a member of Circus Fans Association of America. This brings me into contact with many professional clowns. They do take their humor seriously, but they love life an other people with a special passion. Many volunteer in hospitals bringing smiles and hope to patients young and old. We are a very upbeat organisation and show our love and support for the circus and its family of performers. Yes, send in the clowns, please!

Try watching John Safran's whole thing on his quest for the right religion. he does it with plenty of humor. he makes me laugh my head off. here is a funny sample.

VERY FUNNY!!!? and when the shoe is on the other foot they find it inappropriate hahahahahahaha

I really must disagree, most of my favourite comedians are atheists, my favourite writer (Douglas Adams) described himself as a radical atheist just to make it clear how strong his thoughts were on the matter. I am not a "people" person, so avoid as much socialising as I can, but I find atheists love irony and are awesome at making jokes at their own expense.
Or in the case of Arthur Dent: He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife. (6)

You are not the only one that notices this. Which to me is hilarious. I find I am fortunate to have friends who are equally as amused by life and what people believe, including ourselves, for the good or bad. Though Juggaloes. Nobody but me thinks Juggaloes are awesome in my group of friends. And hilarious.

Life is a tragic comedy isn't it?

I think religion is a prime source of humorous material. Most of my friends and acquaintances are atheists and most of them are as irreverent as I am.

There are also some superb atheist comedians out there too at the moment. You don't even need to change the bible to make it funny....

Often when I try to interject humor into a religious discussion I'm thought of as rude or it derails the conversation completely. Two atheists die and go to heaven, they look at eachother, then at St. Peter. St. Peter sees the confused looks on their faces and says, "don't worry, we don't believe anything he says either."

I have a sense of humor but I do not discuss these kinds of things in my personal life. My first experience is on this site and things do seem a bit serious at times

Have you spent much time on this site? I think we have many humorous people here. Sometimes it's disguised as sarcasm, but funny. Just my opinion. 🙂

You are right. I was referring to my real world interactions which are far more dour. I left the Unitarians, who are great people, because any hint of humor seemed to be abandoning or trvializing the so called secular mission. I realize our time is finite in an an infinite universe. Raman! Let's have a little fun.

as anywhere depends who you are talking to

Humanist, skeptic, agnostic, atheist, etc .. recognize the harm that religion, religious dogma and religious individuals and organisations do to the world and to humanity in particular and find it difficult to see any humor in it. (IMHO)

You see! That's funny!

When it comes to religion, I think being on the receiving end negates most humor.. Too, when I analyze ‘religious humor,’ it’s predicated on myths being facts. There’s humorous, and there’s pitiful … I’d label religion the latter..

As far as this crew, they’ve an edgy, phosphated ..almost gallows humor; sarcasm’s in there, too - they’ve made me grin wide 😉

I am the funniest person you will ever meet, including doing stand up comedy.....and if you ever give me any grief about it, I will make you laugh so hard you will fall down, where I can safely kick you before coddling away.

Lmao @ "coddling away."

Actually it was supposed to be "toddling" away, but I am so damn hilarious, even unconsciously, it kills! Buwahahahaaaa!

@AnneWimsey and humble too!

@EricTrommater oh hell no.....i got over that a long time ago!

@AnneWimsey I bet you are fun to go Halloween costumn hunting with at Goodwill.

@silverotter11 why, yes, yes I am, thankyuvurrymuch?

@AnneWimsey the most fun I ever had was costumn hunting with a gay friend, a store manager at Goodwill at one point (we'd been there about 45 minutes) came over and asked us if there any thing he could help us find.

@silverotter,, I would have laughed so hard I wouldn't have made it to the ladies room
