Has anyone read the Communist Manifesto?

Has anyone read the Communist Manifesto? That is the next book on my reading list, and I am curious what it is about. Any quick summary would be appreciated.

No but have read up on Marxism. I believe the government has the reponsiblity of controlling a lot of the peoples things around them and protecting them from those who would abuse power. I don't think government should own everything but to regulate prices those who are making products can charge for them. I do believe in private business, land, and homeownership. Don't believe business can charge as much as some is willing to !

It's Karl Marx's solution to the inequities of Victorian capitalism in England.It proproses Land /Wealth redistribution, the crushing of democratic systems and installing a Proletarian Centralized governing body..though it's been awhile since I tried to finish reading it in the 70's..so I may be a bit off..

That sounds like the fairest description yet. Thank you.

In communism everyone but the ruling elite is poor. Why would you read a book about that? Look at the difference between North and South Korea. One is hard line communist whose people live in poverty and are starving and the other is a free prosperous capitalist country. At night the South is brightly lit while the North is almost totally dark except for a few lights at the capital. There’s really no good reason to read the communist manifesto unless your trying to figure out why people turn to communism.

That sounds a bit like propaganda.

that is communism is abuse of socialism. In the United States we have a basic socialist government but we allow those with to buy politicians. This is were we went wrong letting a few with so much power not that much different then Communism. A few with all the wealth and power!

Read it. I see no value in Communism. If we were intelligent, unemotional, and moral, it would probably work well. But we humans are nothing like that.

communism does not equal Socialism

@benhmiller Never said it was.

@Reignmond so many think it does

@benhmiller Some think Democrats, Liberals, and Progressives are all the same. It only serves to prove their ignorance.

Yeah. Brief summary: idealism fails and becomes despotism. Oh, wait, that's reality.
Basically it says every one does equal work for an equal share.

I recommend an economics textbook.

written by capitalists? Or Marxist?

@benhmiller written by economists.

I remember studying it when I went to college in one of the political science courses. The Communist Manifesto was written by Karl Marx and another German philosopher in the 1840's. They advocated changes for the common people. Such as private land ownership, public education, fair taxes, better working conditions and ending child labor. Pretty everything the republiKKKans hate.
.

Engels was his name

The Communists Manifesto is just another idea of government. Every government has failed! If everyone was good people the communist idea of government would work.

That's why I advocate for a science based government. If it's proven to be good, or bad you act accordingly. If there is inconclusive data you pass no law.

Yes, meant to support Social Democrats and the working class

Yes. I have read it, as well as DAS KAPITAL. The Manifesto was a brief rationale and call to action by Marx. It has some appeal, but it hides the true nature of communism. If you really want to understand communism, the ONLY book to read is THE NEW CLASS by Milovan Djilas. Djilas was an ardent communist and served as the vice president of Yugoslavia under Tito. He came to understand the true nature of communism and became disillusioned with it. The book analyzes the true nature of communism and how it is a totally flawed total system ideology which is inevitably totalitarian. He served 20 years in Yugoslav prison for writing the book. The book is the best analysis of communism ever written.

Yes, you will find it annoying as now it is mostly an historical document. Nothing too Earth shattering in their though. Just worker rights... kinda stuff we all mostly agree with. We've been indoctrinated to see it is abnormal to think this way but despite that, we still mostly do.

No Shortcuts. I read it on 1969-1970. It is a matter of Respect for those that became before me. We can talk about after you have done your deed.
