I didn't inherit any "happiness gene." In fact, I could list all of the things that genetically weren't great, but I'd rather frame this one positively.
So, I'm lucky to have thick hair. Despite the fact that it goes POOF with a little humidity and sheds everywhere. It can be a pain, but I think it's worth it. I rather doubt I'll have an issue with thinning hair. I'm also glad to have inherited my grandmother's cheekbones. I'm hoping to age like my paternal grandmother. As she puts it, "she's one sexy grandma." LOL
I think I can safely say that most or all of my functioning genes are "good genes." they have been subjected to a sorting process called natural selection for billions of years, and the fact that I am here typing this message is testament to the survival and reproductive success of a chain of ancestors stretching back to the dawn of life on Earth. I also have a lot of old genes that have been turned off, since they code for traits that are no longer fashionable: things like a tail, scaly skin, or big fangs and the bones and muscles to make them work. With any luck, some of this stuff will come back in style!
I don't see anything of either parent in me at all - My father was violent alcoholic and my mother was unmaternalistic manipulator who had no time for her own children. I grew up to parental and quite laid back - go figure
Probably is in the genes too but life can change people a lot - nature vs nurtue.
@Eltopoman I agree with @Neraven about nature vs nurture. I grew up in a home that was physically, verbally, and sexually abusive with a mother on Dilantin so she was emotionally absent. I made a point to turn away from physical violence and verbal abuse (no name calling), crusades against sexual abuse, and hugged and kissed my children daily. I believe we can nurture ourselves to steer away from unhealthy lifestyles by consciously making healthier choices for ourselves. Congratulations on taking the nature (character, strength of convictions) and making life better for you and yours!
I think I inherited a good set of genes. They're still working now and came with a lifetime guarantee.
I have a birth defect, too. I don't have the dust gene--I hated dusting the baseboards (clogs my nose), so I went into teaching.
Probably my best genes are hair that began graying late (My grandmother was about half and half when she passed at 83). Also, besides laugh (and "fuck off" ) lines, my face has few age lines. I attribute it to being a hippie and then discovering my eyes are allergic to make-up, so my face was au naturale most of my life.
What are fuck off lines? XD furrowed brows and/or frown lines?
@EllenDale I've actually had this conversation with a Doctor. I look very unlined for 53. I can't wrinkle my forehead. No crows feet.
Apparently my version is entirely genetic. Some people don't wrinkle like that (early anyway). I have a hard time judging who is my age because of this! lol
I had a friend who at 8 years old could put three furrows in her forehead by raising her brows. I still can't.
However not sun bathing and not smoking help most folk. And I agree not having to peel a makeup mask off your face - is a very good thing. I'm very picky when I do wear any - which is incredibly rare.
@EllenDale My older sisters did that - and they have the sun damaged skin to show for it. They aren't terribly wrinkled but more leathery? (So glad they aren't on this site).
I had some fantastic burns as a kid (No sunscreen) - but didn't do that laying out and roasting with baby oil thing (ok maybe once).
Hmm… I'm having some real difficulty with this question, and at first I thought it would be easy. The couple of things that come to mind are things I can't confirm I inherited until I'm older: my father is in his 80s but looks like he could still be in his 60s, and there's a rather low incidence of cancer in the family (even though my mother died from cancer, but hers seemed to be because of a localized infection). So, maybe I'll be a youthful-looking, cancer-free geriatric?
I am 5 foot 7, Chubby, I have ulcerative colitis, and I am starting to go grey in my early thirties. Genetics are not my friend.
I empathise with your condition of ulcerated colitis, My Mother has this and Crohns and my son has Crohns and my daughter has tummy problems undiagnosed. Me I have wheat intolerence and we have auto immune disorder running through our genes, however touch wood I am the lucky one.
You got mitochondria! Be VERY happy for that and no cystic fibrosis, sometimes the good genes are the functional ones versus unfunctional/dysfunctional ones!
My mother, Me, my son... we all can dance. We are naturals... I am musical too... my 2 daughters play musical instruments better than me, just like my son is a better dancer than me. But it is the Hard Work you put in, genes only open the door, make you learn something more easy... but genes do not take you far if you don't apply yourself. I can see a lot of me in my son... But he can't do poetry as I can... But with his looks... he don't need to. He can play Male Bimbo. My genes will help him later, during the freak-on.
Dancing .. oh yeah .. my great passion. Anything you ask .. the whole night through, but having slight imbalance .. I can't any more .. dancing takes precise balance ..gone for me .. so sad..
@gemini31 Dont you dare to give it up! Never give up dancing!
@GipsyOfNewSpain I fall if I dance .. I cry because I miss it so much ..
@gemini31 you shall Never cry!
Ok, focus on good here
my maternal grandparents were 92 & 96 when they left their bodies behind; my paternal grandparents were both in their eighties. I inherited a clear & easily tanning complexion from both my parents: no freckles. my mother also passed her rather small, non-sagging (so far!) boobs on to me. so, yeah, I could almost go for "one sexy grandma", only I'm not even one sexy ma
@silvereyes, you don't want to know the non-good ones i bear & grin.
@silvereyes, if i look closer at this habit to emphasize negativity, i'd say that's inherited as well - of course i don't know whether through the genes or behavioural training.
All of us kids, save one, inherited my mother's small frame and thinish body. Not one in the family is overweight. We also all have a full head of hair without much greying.
This site is crazy for memories. I just sent you a trip I once made. You will never think the roads in Okie land are bad after this.
From the question about memorable trips.@silvereyes
@silvereyes Did you find the link I sent to you? Look under memorable trips. If you get it (it is short) watch the end.
I think so lol. Reasonably intelligent, reasonably sexy, not going bald. Yet. May not!!!
I have good hair, eye sight and a sense of humor. My parents lived into their late 70's and my grandparents on both sides lived into their 80's.
So if I don't get hit by a bus I still have a few good years left.
I have the hair gene and the humor gene.
@silvereyes The we must NEVER hang out. The Earth would explode and be covered with our hair. ...or we could build a shed with what we shed.
My mom's ample bosom.
I am glad I didn't got that. I would had loved her Hazel Eyes.
Blue eyes and freckles. High curiosity, language skills.
Low tolerance for BS.
Alas, also the defective auto immune gene from my father.
Everything else is self inflicted.
I think I got lucky because of me Asian genes. I have thick, long, healthy black Asian hair like you made mention of your hair as well. I have never had acne or any skin issues. I have never had to shave my legs as I'm virtually hairless minus my mane.
I don't really mind my tiny hands and feet as much as I complain because I can always find shoes easy and they are attractive. I got our family mouth so my lips are full and teeth came in straight. I, too, got high cheekbones and unlike my full Asian cousins, I got eyelids! Hahaha!
I have the typical Asian build, short torso, super long legs. My legs are my families as well. Common trait.
I credit my intelligence to both my mother and father as they were both accelerated people and even met at A MENSA function. They were both geniuses. It must have been the attraction. Lol!
I think I lucked out, for sure. We also do not age. I have no wrinkles as of yet, not one. No crows feet, no laugh lines. Absolutely nothing. I look well over a decade younger than I am and always have. It can also have it's downsides like condescendingly being addressed because it is assumed I am too young to have valuable input. Usually I'm older than the ones being snippy or at the very least, I am much older than the assumption made.
@silvereyes oh do you now? Do you mind if I ask what Asian background?
@silvereyes oh wow! yeah most of my asian family in the states are in Hawai'i too. I grew up on Oahu and Maui, along with California. How strange! she May know members of my family because they are All over Hawaai'i and well known since they own many businesses and chains. they have been in hawai'i since the early 1900's
No! I got the worst of both. Everything that is wrong with my mom and everything that is wrong with my dad, all rolled into a nice ball and dropped on me. I did get one thing that some would claim is good. That is the intelligence. The jury is still deliberating on that. It’s probably going to end a tie. On the plus side, I did get a sense of humor. I’m pretty sure that developed all on its on though.
Good, Bad I just play with the genes I got. Nothing I can do about it so, why worry?
