The Mayor’s annual salary is $24,000, and Council members’ annual salary is $12,000.

If I were elected Mayor tomorrow, I woudn't know how to feed my family on that salary.
My opinion is that the salary should go up much higher, say 100k.
And at the same time, we should end "Citizen United: AKA bribery is freedom of speech".
Maybe Mayors and Council members DO need bribery money because they get paid so little.
I don't know how y'all first came to the Citizen United decision, and are going along with this so quietly.
So as pointed out by many people, this is a part time position. Then how do you feel about your Mayor being a part timer?
Government employment is referred to as "public service" because one doesn't make the kind of money one would if employed in the private sector. All of these Republicans seeking to retire before the midterms will go on to make millions representing corporate law or writing books.
Note that the article states that all 9 council members, including the mayor, serve part time. Clearly they have (or have had) other careers, and if that's what the city wants, then it doesn't trouble me. The less powerful any government is, including city government, the more independent and self-reliant its citizens may be. Most of the Framers would be aghast with our modern system of career politicians.
Our New York Governor makes $179K, officially. Our Mayor makes $225K, officially. I'm not stupid enough to believe that's all they make.
We have a candidate for Governor this election that might actually make me get off my ass to vote for her.
Oh and your Governor makes about $129K.
And one wonders why there is graft and corruption in the gov? This was a fine whine about FL state government in the early 60's -- They did reorganize and provided legislators w/ at least a living salary. Knew an engineer that interviewed for a state job "S of the Hee Haw line" - salary was low but the interviewer said "you'll double that on the "gifts" from the contractors" -- he ran like crazy to a real company.
Just like all these guys said hahaha? Shaking hands w fingers crossed behind
It's explained in the form of government page you linked. There is an overall Mayor elected for the city and each ward elects a city council member. They get together and "hire" a city manager to deal with the day to day administration while the mayor and council members set policy. Its sounds more part-time than full time position.
I make just under that amount and it is very hard to make the ends even wave at each other. I am one of those Americans who is one sickness away from bankruptcy. My last job interview was for a retail position and was told that I was to experianced for the job!
it is a sad situation the country is in.
Idk about you but my mayor works 1 day a week.
Maybe this mayor is getting some other benefits you don't know about- free housing, City vehicle or reduced taxes. How much do you know? It says the Council is part-time? Is the Mayor able to own a business with someone else running it?
Who are these "you guys" you speak of? And you're way off-base on wanting higher salaries for public office. THAT is part of the problem. High salaries and excellent benefits and perks are part of what attracts "career politicians" to begin with. I hear what you're saying about bribes, but that is outright corruption. These are part-time gigs (from your own source) and should be treated as such in terms of salary.
Sorry about "you guys" if that upsets you. I tried to strike through but couldnt figure out. Higher salaries and heavier punishment for bribery are how Simgapore got a hold of their corruption issues, so I've heard( without documented sources to confirm)
