LINK Should I remove or reply to my racist Facebook friend? - BBC News

I think we've all asked ourselves this question over the last few weeks. What did you do, reply or remove?

I will try to reach them. If they have dug in and can't be reached, they need to go because I can't waste time on the unreachable.

I tell them what I think, and what I think of their opinions. If I have a long-term friendship and credibility with them I might even scold them.

I don't generally unfriend them, but I unfollow them. On a rare occasion, when one interjected himself into the commentary under my posts, I unfriended and blocked him.

Only the rare hater changes....very rare. I say cut them loose. Again, life is too short. Let them know what you stand up for, rebuking them is the only way.

@ReadyforaChange I have one elderly gentleman, Trump supporter, and buyer into most of the bullshit. He is a previous patient who I became pretty close with over his treatment and in many ways is a kind and compassionate man. I take him to task on everything he posts and flag the fake shit he shares, and he always responds with respect and is willing to listen to my opposing views. I don't think I have changed his party voting stance, but he has thanked me multiple times for making him see things differently. I will engage as long as their is mutual respect. Not common to find these days to be sure, but when it exists, I believe it is worth the effort to continue the communication. You may not completely change someone's mind, but you might help set them on the path to getting there.

I used to believe that countering their idiocy with information and facts would sway their views, but I've never seen an example in which it did, so now I unfriend them. Sadly, one this week was my SIL, and it probably irrevocably severed our relationship. But it's just not healthy to be around that toxic person, you know?

Right! If facts or logic meant anything to them they wouldn't worship the orange clown.

@BitFlipper You're right, and I don't know why I persisted. It was rather illogical of me. ☺️

People who are racist, sexist or abusive are not my friends. If they are yours, what does that say about you? I use facebook to keep in touch with blood relatives and immediate friends only.

Whoa, buddy, I am not personally struggling with this, but based on multiple other posts it's a problem for many, so I thought the article might be useful to share. I learned a lonnnng time ago the benefits to eliminating toxic people from my life.

@Amzungu It does make for a more peaceful life doesn't it? My post wasn't meant to be accusatory, sorry, when I read it back I see how you took it that way. The question was meant to be rhetorical to get people to think.

@Cyklone Thank you for the clarification. I did see it could be read both ways, but wanted to be clear that sitting quietly by anyone being sexist, abusive or racist is definitely not my way with things. And yes, life is so much more peaceful when you set boundaries with toxic people. It can be a hard lesson to learn at times, but is certainly worth the effort.

I removed one that was a proud racist. I had one unfriend me that I sadly suspect may have been racist

When someone's outlook is completely antithetical to what I have believed & stood up for all my life, I cannot be their friend, they are in every way a stranger to me!

I don't use facebook... ☺

Sweet baby Jesus, I wish I could make a full break, but it's still the only platform a lot of my Kenyan kids use. 😟

@Amzungu bring them here ☺

@Cutiebeauty Working on one, anyway. 🙂 Though Kenya's adoption laws are super strict, intended to protect the children so I can't really complain, but adoption of a minor is damn near impossible. I've got one graduating from university next year and am working on his legal adoption as an adult. He had no legal guardian alive to give permission for a minor adoption, so we've waited until we get the law on our side. The others I'm trying to push to WhatsApp. 😉

Hurray. Somebody else out there that does not use FACEBOOK. I refuse to use facebook. It full of dumb ass people posting pictures of what they had for lunch.
