With respect to people believing in god or the supernatural, should we “live and let live,” or try to persuade others of reality?
I’ve heard many advocate “not caring what other people believe.” But since we live in a democracy and delusional dogmatic thinking affects how people vote, it has always seemed not only wise but almost a social responsibility to persuade people of the truth.
Additionally, having been a theist in the past, I was thankful for the people who pulled me out of that delusion. I would mourn for those who waste their life making decisions based on a misplaced view of reality; this is a compassionate reason to persuade people.
We should do what I like to a reverse Constantine. Just Kidding.
Live and Let Live. Other people's beliefs can only affect you if you allow it.
The beliefs of others affect use all. If you can't see it, you have already normalized it.
As long as they do not suppress and alienate any type free of speech, relationships, the press, the media, and places we can live or travel!
First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out - because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak out for me.

I voted for what seems to be the most popular option. I'd be inclined towards "persuade when possible", except that it's not my personal style.
Ditto.
Live and let live only so far as it affects themselves. Where I refuse to stand by is when their stupidity starts harming others, even if it never affects me personally.
Agreed!
Other's beliefs effect me daily here in the south. And certainly effect those in Islamic countries. I stand, I won't always fight, but I will stand against intolerant beliefs, all of which effect me daily.
As long I am left to my own devices... we are good.
You gotta point out bullshit when you hear it. Pick your battles, but suffer no fools gladly
We complain about how the religious zealots try and shove their dogma down other's throats yet talk about doing the same. To me, only if they start it do I respond. Tit for Tat.
As a 'victim' of the last 40 or so years of stupidity from the US population, (and still fighting that shit), I will not live & let live! EVER!!
Soooooo sorry, but the rich, the religious, the racist, the sexist, the ableist, and ANYONE else that's not caught up with its 2018 will get my foot up their ass. Just way done with their shit.
This^
People's beliefs do effect us. So there really is no true 'live and let live'. But we should certainly be concious of how we persuade others. Being overly zealous or confrontational may drive them away. Being too passive or nonconfrontational may never accomplish anything. It's a thin line. ?
As long as no one else is trying to push their beliefs on me I am okay with whatever they want to believe.
No. If the religious stayed out of government, possibly, but even then history shows they'll abuse others and their children.
Live and let live is a great philosophy, but everyone has to play along - they don't do they.
