Cooking with Muxes, Mexico's Third Gender
Muxes are people who are born biologically male and dress as women—but they don't consider themselves cross-dressers or transgender. Instead, they are treated as “the third gender,” and they identify neither as men nor as women.
Can we get passed gender....really? I don't like picking teams.
Much like Native American tribes here in the states. Nice photo~
Yes, that was my thought, though I don't know much about it.... I had heard about some sort of gender or role like this among some (how many?) native tribes.
@kmaz. Check out this article on Indian Country Today's web site. Might answer some of your questions. [newsmaven.io]
Great article, thanks for sharing. It says:
"...At the point of contact, all Native American societies acknowledged three to five gender roles: Female, male, Two Spirit female, Two Spirit male and transgendered...."
I am a bit wary of claims spanning "all" Native American tribes (that's a lot of tribes... were there absolutely no exceptions?), but I want quickly to add that assuming the claim is substantially correct, it's darned interesting on various levels.
@kmaz I give more creedance to this Native run publication than I may a non-native article, but I understand you questioning the inclusivity of all tribes. My thoughts are their original belief systems and cultures were free from European religious dogma, therefore removing sexual taboos associated with that. Theirs was a natural progression of values and beliefs, holding higher esteem for those 'gifted' individuals like the Muxes. Unfortunate that the spread of Christianity was so profound~
Iguana, not my favourite - it has a weird metallic flavour to it.
