These would be The Mound Builders, they were wiped out by the diseases that spread ahead of the White Invasion of North America. I've read accounts where early explorers entered great cities that were empty of all life, this was before the colonizers/invaders moved west and plowed those mounds under after raiding them for the indian bones to be turned into health tonics.
