On a personal note - wondering whether these folks might have included Polynesian relatives! This is not a frivolous concern - as Polynesian DNA is evident in the present population. My question really is - When did the Polynesians arrive there? Some of the smart folks here may have ideas. Any ideas or discussion are welcome. Thanks.

10,500 BP corresponds to the end of the time period when vast amounts of water still remsined locked up in ice at the poles. It is not too difficult to concieve of a situation whereby a land bridge linked SE Africa and Madagascar. If eustatic sea level was low enough to allow a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska, perhaps low enough to provide a land bridge between these other two locations. I do not know the geology of Africa or Madagascar to know for certain if this situation existed. Just speculating.

There was probably some kind of land bridge in the Malay peninsula, too. Maybe as far as Australia.

That's one really big Ostrich and I don't think I would want to hunt even a modern day ostrich with a sharpened stick, let alone one that stood 14 feet tall.
