"Laser Scans Reveal Maya "Megalopolis" Below Guatemalan Jungle

Researchers have identified the ruins of more than 60,000 houses, palaces, elevated highways, and other human-made features that have been hidden for centuries under the jungles of northern Guatemala ... At its peak in the Maya classic period (approximately A.D. 250–900), the civilization covered an area about twice the size of medieval England ... “With this new data it’s no longer unreasonable to think that there were 10 to 15 million people there." Pretty amazing. I have read several books about lost or hidden cities and newly discovered tribes living apart from "civilization". It got me to wondering about our, so called, desire to embrace 'diversity'. In bringing in more and more other cultures we are also losing cultures like these newly discovered tribes. The words is losing cultures and languages and it doesn't seem to bother us; it should.

Also, I just finished reading "The Lost City of the Monkey God" about a similar discovery in Honduras. [uk.news.yahoo.com] Unbelievable hardships under extremely demanding conditions. However, the 2nd half of the book had a terrible lesson for us and the 'curse' is coming true in some parts of the US.

Do you mean the curse of contracting an unforeseen disease during the expeditions in the US ????????

@AnonySchmoose The disease is called Leishmanaisis [cdc.gov]
“The parasite migrates to the mucous membranes of your mouth and your nose, and basically eats them away,” Preston said. “Your nose falls off, your lips fall off, and eventually your face becomes a gigantic, open sore.”

Over the next few months, about half the expedition came down with the early symptoms, and had to undergo the painful treatment.

Because of climate change this fly and parasite is starting to show up in parts of the Southern US. Reading about it is scary as hell.

@JackPedigo
Thanks for explaining how it got to southern US. Trump fans there lack too much brain matter to believe diseases can result from global warming and climate change.

@AnonySchmoose I think it's less a matter of not believing and more one of not wanting to believe. Remember, these people are appealing to the only real base they have, fundamentalist Christians. To them their 'loving' (and I use the word loosel) would never do this to them.

I wish would have had this technology available to us when I was a practicing field archaeologist. We were on the cutting edge of satellite imagery, but limited access. Nothing like this new technology. Exciting.
