A spotted salamander, a Jefferson's salamander and an Eastern newt, just 3 of the 41 salamanders I found last night while surveying some vernal pools. Final tally was: 1 spotted, 2 Eastern newts, and 38 Jefferson's. It is still early in the season, which is probably why so few newts and spotteds (and NO frogs, yet), but it is still encouraging to see so many Jefferson's. Jefferson's salamanders are a species of special concern, here in Pennsylvania.
they look very cute & vulnerable. what will you do with them?
