Even though my sleeves are soaked up to my elbows and I'm bleeding from a dozen greenbrier scratches, tonight was a great night out in the woods searching the vernal pools for mole salamanders. My favorite vernal pool was (expectedly) fruitful: 22 salamanders of 2 species. Twenty-one were Jefferson's salamanders, 1 was a spotted salamander. The Jefferson's are our earliest mole salamanders to emerge. It's not uncommon to see them migrating over ice and snow to to their breeding pools. The spotted was a welcome surprise. These guys/gals were all returned to their pool after being photographed and counted.

Very nice! Are either of these endangered?

We have California Tiger Salamanders here. They are endangered.
