The kindest way is three fold: 1 - measure how much you feed him. A standard ten pound (ideal wt) should eat around a half cup of dry food per day. I divide my cats' between two quarter cup meals per day. 2 - switch him to a reducing diet, that contains higher fiber for a fuller feeling without the extra calories. 3 - provide exercise, play with him. It is not easy st first, but is worth it. Excess weight often leads to diabetes and/or fatty liver, both of which are often fatal in cats. I have had to treat both and it was very sad.
More protein. That's what I keep hearing.
However what do you feed Mr. Mouse currently?
I feed a decent dry food around the clock (always available) and high quality wet food once a day to my three kitties.
One is plumptious - but he arrived here that way - and seems to be slimming down a little bit.
I have to say in my cat groups we always say "But check with your Vet" because if there are preexisting health conditions you must feed them towards whatever that is first. (Such as kidney disease or diabetes).
