Don't be afraid to post in here!
Am I the guinea pig! I'm a former commercial cotton farmer who turned into an art teacher. I still manage the farm but I don't actually do the tractoring, etc. I have a tenant farmer. I have another piece of land that's enrolled into a permanent conservation easement to protect it from development. It's a native short grass prairie. Not a lot of that left in cotton country! I've sold pottery at art festivals, worked as a sub-contractor for landscape irrigation repairs, and participated in a local farmer's market while holding my 'real' job. I'd like to leave this job at some point and work for myself again in some fashion, maybe teaching pottery lessons on my own land where my old clay workshop is. A few years ago, before the (now) ex turned into a bar fly, I even considered doing that and building a few KOA style of cabins for the pottery students to live in while they were there. So, I'm always interested in self-actualization and becoming less interested in facilitating an organization's agenda such as a school. That's a little bit of what I think about every day
Fascinating. I inherited a HUGE -- I mean insanely huge -- mid century art pottery collection....so that, along with all the antique furniture and other heirlooms make up the decor of my BnB. I WISH I had pottery experience. I am fascinated by the glazing and the history of ceramics. I keep threatening to write a collector's book based on the Pottery in my heritage collection.
@SkotlandSkye Do you know what potteries the pieces came from; their provenances?
@farmboy2017 Yes! I've done a ton of research...even met the daughter of the founder of one of the potteries! I have a color code system now for all of my china. The major potteries are Savoy, Deena, Cameron Clay, McCoy, Dixon Art Studios...etc.
@SkotlandSkye I'll have to look those up. The only one that comes to mind at the moment is Pewabic but there's lots more.
