I'm trained as a functional Potter. I'd rather make pots than sell pots as that's where my real skill is. Any suggestions on what I might consider in terms of marketing?
Do you have a Facebook business page?
Then also advertise in Facebook marketplace...and local Buy/Sell/Trade Groups
Also, craigslist
Those are the "free" options
Then, farmer's markets and flea markets are good...
And craft fairs and art fairs
But those all cost "booth fees"
Team up with a partner who goes to those events --- offer to cover the booth fee in exchange for them setting up a display of your pots and and selling them for you so you don't have to attend
One of the things I've concluded is that no one really wants pottery. They can get it anywhere and they don't really need 'pots'. They can get their cups and mugs and bowls and plates at WalMart, I'd like to have a shop where people came in and bought directly from me. The pots end up being the documentation of the relationship to the potter. Every time I've seen a pottery shop where they just sold pots and didn't make them onsite, they didn't last long. I'm thinking it's because the product becomes just another object and what people are really looking for is fellowship. I think I need to use my potter's wheel and make 'fellowship'!
@farmboy2017 I have wandered into pottery shops just to watch the person making the pots...I think that you are right...people like the "show". Do you have room on your property for a retail shop and work area where people can observe?
@SkotlandSkye I do have room but it's 20 miles out of town on a dirt road. I need to be in Ruidoso, NM or a place similar to that where the town is already recognized as an artsy community.
@farmboy2017 makes sense...do you really want to your place and move?
@SkotlandSkye I've given it some thought! In a few weeks I think I'll visit Trinidad, CO and see what that town is like, artwise. My place is in the middle of cotton country and people don't take art seriously. Real art comes from NM or CO! That's the mentality, here. And I've thought of setting up a teaching studio where people come in and take lessons. Kinda therapeutic
@farmboy2017 if you could do that in conjunction with a BnB....that would be really cool...
Have you looked at Medicine Park, Ok as a place to set up shop? It's a really cool artsy town that gets a lot of tourist due to the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge....and Lawton, OK (right next to it) has a huge art community and a great art festival called "Arts For All"
@SkotlandSkye I might have to check it out. Is the festival anytime soon?
@farmboy2017 It was just in May....but check out the Lawton Arts Council and their Event list....it's a great area for artists [facebook.com]
@SkotlandSkye Thanks! I did check out Medicine Park a bit and it looks promising. It would be nice to have a place to garden. Those mountain towns might be too cool and Rocky!?
Maybe you could offer to let florists or greenhouses sell then on consignment.
Those are good ideas....most places want insane commission for doing that --- usually about 30% --- but if he can find someplace that will do it for far less, it would definitely be worth it.
