The majority of the second ammenment supporters (judging by comments made) believe a heavily armed society is a polite society. This is not what the second ammenment is about. To me, it fully proves too many gun nuts are thugs and support vigilantism. guns were/are not an alternative to the of law and law enforcement.
I might ask them why is being polite more important than not getting shot?
Since when does owning a certain amount of firearms automatically equate to being a thug? I'm soon going to be employed as an armed security guard, and I could assure you that I've never committed any random acts of thuggery. Most people don't realize the police have no legal obligation to protect anyone directly, they only enforce our laws and punish criminals. Each individual is responsible for his/her own safety. I see you have dropped in for a peek on some of the posts in the new pro gun rights group I started. If the topic interests/concerns you that much, you might as well join in on the debate there, I won't stop you from partaking in on any debates that may take place in that group. Mike needed one other person...
Is a police officer's job to Serve and Protect the public. My problem is more with people. People are violent, irrational ,jump to conclusions, are overprotective ,paranoid they make mistakes in judgement, drug users, alcoholics some have mental issues and yes, gun owners are no different. There are hundreds of incidences reported of gun owners firing their lethal weapons and they are not under attack and their lives are not in danger. the more people we have owning guns the more of these incidences we see. Why does all self-protection have to be about slaughtering out people? Why is it so important to use only deadly force? Why are guns the only answer to every problem? The fact of the matter your more likely to have grizzly bear repellent, or other non-lethal forms of Self Protection, banned in your state then military style weapons.
@Kojaksmom I don't think it's as important to be quick to use lethal force as it is simply having the means to defend oneself. There are other weapon alternatives to guns, most of which I'm open to and understand if other people would be interested in other self defense products. Don't know about other states, but my state doesn't ban or regulate alot of things, and fireworks are even legal now. Guns don't solve all problems, but could be a solution in at least some scenarios. I agree with the people part, people are the direct problem, and that's what society needs to work on.
@SpikeTalon thank you for that. Although we don't agree on many things, I appreciate you.
@Kojaksmom Thank you for the compliment, and I reciprocate as well.
And an armed society is not a polite society. Since reducing regulations on guns wichita has had more shootings than ever.
And then everybody lives in fear ,and then everybody thinks they need to have a gun. it's a vicious cycle.
Again, they believe what they want to believe. History has proven over and over again that an armed society is a violent one. Only a complete fool would believe otherwise.
unfortunately the supreme has ruled their interpretation on the second amendment is correct despite the minutes from this hardly discussed amendment was clearly about states rights to raise an militia. It was one of the least debated amendments
The ruling left open the door for regulations.
@JackPedigo This needed to be said. Thanks
A heavily armed society will never be a polite society.
The second amendment came about because of the lack of a standing army combined with the fear of slave rebellions. It had nothing to do with personal freedom and everything to do with keeping Africans enslaved.
Not just, but among other things, yes. We had just spent 8 years a war and that was a part of it, but that was army size not personal protection.
I read the Thomas Jefferson believed that every generation the constitution needed to be amended as things change. So far the only real change occurred because of the civil war. The time for a major overhaul is way overdue. Part of the problem is the onerous procedures we need to go through to ratify any changes.
