New Zealand PM announces ban on all assault rifles following Christchurch massacre
[www-m.cnn.com]
I'm speaking from the benighted country of New Zealand, where the entire country is in enforced mourning. It's very easy to pull off this kind of concerted effort in a small country because of the village mentality and finger-pointing that ensues if you're out of step on any issue at all. I have always felt sorry for rationally minded people in the US who want gun control. The fact is, NZ should have done it in 1994 when Australia did. It was a clear example to follow from our nearest and closest associated country, culture, and ally. But no, apathy is the default position in NZ, along with a certain moral superiority that said, "It will never happen here." Even now, most people are saying, "This is not us -- an Australian did it."
We, in the U.S., need to follow suit.
Absolutely!
I heard this on NPR this morning. My question is will Australia follow suite?
Pretty sure Australia already did, a few years ago.
Police Commissioner Mike Bush said in a statement;
"I can't emphasize enough that in the current environment it is important you do not take your now-unlawful firearm anywhere without notifying police,"
Bush said "It is absolutely vital that we manage the safe and organized transport of all firearms into police custody."
Wow. They're getting serious down under...and off to the side. Kudos, New Zealand.
Some Countries have leaders who aren't insane... Good for NZ.
