Wow! I had not taken the time to view gun violence in America for a long while. This was mind-numbing, even to me. (Totals, not just mass shootings. All gun related incidents.)
The last 72 hours, all gun violence in America:
318 incidents.
(*If interested, the interactive map is truly something to see. And not in a good way.)
I grew up on a farm where I was taught how to shoot a gun from early childhood.
Against vermin like groundhogs and rats.
A gun was a tool like the plow or the tractor.
The fantasy of using the gun against a person never even entered my imagination.
I think there is a class of gun nuts that fantasize about an excuse to kill someone.
@SeaGreenEyez Some Americans. And it is ridiculous that these people want to use a handgun for self defense with a bullet that can travel hundreds of yards when their neighbor's baby is sleeping in a crib thirty feet away,
I was just looking at photos from WW2 and how flamethrowers were used to fight the Japanese in the Pacific... I remember as a kid little soldiers with flamethrowers but it is when you see them use on Humans!!! WAR IS HELL... And nra has declared war on everyone without a gun!!!! So Sad!!!!
@BufftonBeotch you would probably sing a different tune if you ever had any random violent life threatening situations happen to you. At 17 I was carjacked, beaten, and held at knifepoint. You goddamn right I carry now that I am legally able to.
@GipsyOfNewSpain ANd those running, screaming children in Vietnam whose homes had been napalmed..
That little girl whose clothes had been burned off.
Civilians seem to almost be the targets anymore.
@herpinj I have and the word is random.
If you have a gun you are more likely to be shot or killed by a raging person in your own home or even your toddler - Or by shooting yourself, accidentally or on purpose.
Oh and shooting a teenager who's car broke down because they knock on your door. That happens. Or a teen that went to buy his brother Skittles, and ends up bleeding out on a Florida sidewalk.
Napalm and not only Napalm so also Agent Orange to wipe out and clear covering foliage. And as if Gun Violence was not enough in Texas.... they just approved a bill that will legalize Brass Knuckles!!!
@GipsyOfNewSpain At least someone with a plan to take out a room full of people would need some gumption.
@BufftonBeotch that's a pretty big leap, those numbers are minuscule considering the amount of gun owners and guns in this country. There is a huge difference between responsible gun owners and just gun owners.
In the 18 years that I have been able to legally carry I have never had to draw a weapon and i hope i never have to. I carry because i choose to never be a victim again.
I have 5 children and many firearms. My kids don't even know the guns exist. They have never seen them and never will until I deem it appropriate that they learn to use them. They are always stored in a safe with individual trigger locks on each weapon.
A vast majority fall under the responsible category. There are always some nuts especially with such a large amount of gun owners. That large sample size, the amount of weapons out there, and the second amendment are the reason that bans will not work here. Picking and choosing weapons to ban that some of us don't like will be ineffective, banning high capacity magazines will be ineffective (anybody can just 3D print those anyway).
The only thing that can be done that will have significant impact would be mental health and vastly improved background checks. The private sale loopholes need to be closed. The owners of firearms need to be held accountable for the damage their weapons cause if someone gains access to them due to the not being properly secured.
Arbitrary bans because a weapon looks scary will do nothing to curb the violence in the United states.
