We can talk about it until we are blue in the face, it's not going to change anything. We are notorious for lousy voter turn out. I think we need to come up with a way to get people to the polls. Do that and I think the rest will take care of itself. Trump at best is 40-60% 40% being Trump. Just like Crocodile Dundee 2, If somebody asks are you going to say you didn't do nothing, or are you going to say you helped shut down the worst president this country ever had?
I am definitely guilty of not voting. I regret it but I just couldn’t see myself voting for Hillary, or Trump. I have only voted once in my life and that was when Obama was first elected. I worked for his campaign out in Reno during his second run but I didn’t personally vote myself. I made the mistake last time but I vow to not make that mistake again.
This country needs you to vote
Maybe a lottery of sorts. You vote you get a ticket and a chance to win one of several prizes. Not even being flip here. And a donut at the door. Here in Washington, we are mail-in voters but I hear people saying they can't afford postage. That is sad. If they change to pre-paid envelopes that may increase response. I know some folks who never vote and seem pretty proud of it. I think that much of the problem is that there is censoring of the candidates. The idea that all serious candidates aren't represented in debates prevents people from finding the candidate that really best represents their views. Media corruption and the corruption of the DNC has made respecting either main party damn near impossible. Most people don't even know that there are other candidates to choose from.
I may be misunderstanding. In Washington state, is it mandated that all ballots must be mailed in? If so, You could probably start an advocacy group somewhere that would setup near mail boxes in different areas and affix a "free" stamp to any mail addressed to the ballot location. Such a thing, where they are required to bring the envelope sealed, so that there is no bias or influence, advertised in groups on facebook that are sympathetic to the cause could be useful and powerful. I think many people would be willing to donate a book of stamps to such a cause. Even if it's only a few hundred votes this year, it could be the start of something great.
@DJVJ311 I believe King County (where Seattle is located) is currently considering postage-paid envelopes to increase turnout. We have some designated drop-off sites but they aren't always convenient for shut-ins. The system involves a ballot in an envelope in an envelope so that there is ballot secrecy. I think/hope that more would vote if they didn't have to have a stamp. I like your idea though. I would be more than happy to offer stamps. I think, on a national level, we need to make voting more of a priority and get greater public involvement. Not sure how that can be accomplished when we are all getting so jaded by the corruption.
@DJVJ311, In Washington State ballots are mailed to registered voters. It is NOT mandatory to mail it back or drop it in an official ballot box.
Unfortunately, each time someone moves, they must update their address with the Secretary of State's office. Figuring out the right website is difficult.
My daughter, 28, has moved 12 times in the past 10 years. Each time, I send her the change of address link and bug her to update her address. Then I nag her to vote. Sigh.
@LiterateHiker This country needs you to vote
@MikeFlora, Since age 18, I have voted in EVERY election, including Presidential elections, midterms, school levies, special elections, etc.
As a lifelong Democrat, I never miss an opportunity to vote.
Voting for donuts! There's an idea. But I think we need serious voters who care about issues and serious candidates.
Utah, mail in voting is paid for by taxes. You get the ballot and mail it in postage paid.
@dare2dream Mainstream media has been very good about controlling how much information the public receives about candidates. We keep getting stuck with choices from two corrupt parties. People are just so disgusted with most candidates that they refuse to vote for "the better of two evils". I have a friend write in Mickey Mouse for president.
@Gatekeeper63 : I agree. We keep getting stuck with the corporate-backed candidates of the two major parties. That's why I registered with a third party. An uncorrupted third party candidate is better than Mickey Mouse or the corporate backed candidate.
For about 12 years I was the Equipment manager at my local precinct and observed the people voting. Old white guys and their wives never miss an election. Young people and minorities vote for President but not at the midterms. Part of the problem is the old people are retired and voting gives them something to do. But young people and minorities are working and are too tired to vote after a day of work.
IMO we would have better turn out if elections were held on Sundays.
Or in the evening
I think the problem is lack of interest in politics, policies and issues. On Sundays people will just go to the movies, picnics or whatever.
Yes...and the old people will continue to elect politicians who promise to take America back to 1958. @dare2dream
