Robbie Burns (for Marionville).
Watched another episode from one of my favorite historical journalists Lucey Worsley about the wrongly maligned Queen Anne. tRump is not the first to use corruption to get what they want and the case of the queen using subterfuge to get Scotland to join England was a great example. Now the country became Great Britain. In those days musical parodies were common as a way for people to speak out and Robbie Burns was a master
Thanks for posting...of course it refers to the second Act of Union in 1707...during Queen Anne’s Reign and it was the union of the two parliaments. The first Act of Union called the Union of the Crowns, was in 1603 when King James VI of Scotland inherited the throne of England becoming James I in England, on the death of Elizabeth I, and the two kingdoms were run as two separate counties for over 100 years, and with each having their own parliaments, James taking reginal name of James I and VI of Great Britain. When Scotland talk about gaining independence again, it is only the second Act of Union ...the parliamentary one, that they wish to dissolve.
Great Britain not United Kingdom.
I have known this song a long time probably from Steeleye Span.
@rogerbenham Yes...I have amended that..it was referred to as Great Britain and not the United Kingdom at that time. It only became the UK in 1801 with the other Act Of Union, the one with Ireland ...when the full title became The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Great Britain is actually the name of the mainland only, and doesn’t include the island of Ireland....Great Britain is only Scotland, England and Wales. As I live in Northern Ireland, I don’t live in G.B., but the U.K.
@Marionville I know all of that. My screen is still showing the United Kingdom.
@rogerbenham It should have been amended.
@Marionville It is now!
